FWIW The Mary River proposal was ill considered from the start. An optimal design for a dam requires minimal surface area for max volume... that's why deep relatively narrow gorges are prized... if avaliable. At the other end of the scale was the Mary River catchment which is very broad and relatively shallow... leading to massive evaporation loss. The ill fated Wolfdene proposal during the late 80s early 90s down Loganway would have been ideal... but sometimes politics outweighs sensible engineering
