    Dardanelle 1915

I am interested in views of a ''true reason'' for withdrawal of Allied Forces

from Dardanelle Peninsular 1915. In our district there several WW1 and

WW11 men settled on farms under C S B ,and yarns regarding ''the Hun, t

the Gyppo, the Jap'',where quite common. One of Dad's old mates was in

Dardanelles during latter stage of campaign before going to Western

Front ; (said, wished we'd stayed in Turkey! ) ,anyway he told Dad, we

had to withdraw because Bulgaria, up to then a neutral had come down

on the side of the Kaiser, so henceforth a land route to aid Turkey,

and so a strategic retreat was in order.

    Any comments?

I just finished reading "Gallipoli" by Les Carlyon, worth getting a copy from a second hand bookshop. There was no single reason for the withdrawal, but quite a number of circumstances had changed and it had all bogged down to a stalemate as far as objectives were concerned.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Strange but true. The Gallipoli Campaign ended up being such a mess that the US Marine Corps used it as an exercise in how NOT to conduct an amphibious landing and thus shaped their doctrine around it.

emotive books in stores are not usually my choice for good reading. Will continue

    my keyboard and google homework.

It was a total **** up by Winston Churchill, who was the first Sea Lord at the time, he was sacked for sending men to do an impossible job, from where they were landed.
As for the Yanks using Gallipoli to show how NOT to conduct an amphibian landing, they certainly didn't learn too well, their first landing and joining with Australian troops around Buna and Gona seen the whole Corps (marine) drop their weapons and run from the charging Japs. After that disgrace the highest ranking officer in that Corp was a Sergeant, General Eichleberger, Mac Arthurs second in command was sent to New Guinea and told to fix the problem or die trying, Regards Frank.
