Interesting point about complacency there Pilbara. I work in mining and geological exploration, one of my work mates was telling me about a drilling crew that was doing a rod pull from 1600m.
Laughing and carrying on, late at night so they figured nobody was around to see what they were doing, got to 800m and dropped the last 800m worth of rods back down the hole...
3 weeks to recover the mess, $300k cost to the operator. Guess who wasn't employed the next day...
I'm always exceptionally careful at work, particularly on drill sites, and generally haven't had any issues that weren't my own fault!

Did anyone here read the article in the Sunday Mail about the poor bloke who died of heat related problems in a gas field. Very sad and so unnecessary, my pet hate is compulsory long clothing for everyone. If it were not for peoples ability to sue for skin cancer we would probably be able to have a choice. You should read how all the experts are looking into it, well, I strongly believe people also know their own bodies and should have some say in how they outfit themselves. Although this was not directly caused from long clothing, it would have been a contributing factor to the poor bloke overheating. Its great to have the experts to suggest how much to drink and perhaps suggested break periods etc, but there would be lots of people better of with sun screen and shorts than long pants.

Q: Why can't you use thumb tacks in a display board in a school?
A: Because some stupid kid might stab another kid with it.

Q: Why can't you give paracetamol to kids with headaches?
A: Because a small number of people react to paracetamol so it's better if everyone else suffers.

It's funny really. You get sights, especially building sights where OH&S is way over the top. Then you get other sights which have the potential to be extremely dangerous, such as Oil Terminals or Chemical Plants and they Get it pretty much right, most of the time. Where I work, I am the Safety Delicate, but every one there knows that each of us is very much responsible for his own safety and the safety of others. The potential for serious injury is ever present so nobody runs around with clip boards or rule books annoying everybody and making the issue of Safety a joke. (Except for the manager for the mob next door. Who is a PTA, who is always having to cover his arse). As a consequence we have very few incidences, and when there is an obvious concern I take it to the Management and it is quietly and effectively sorted.
So for me at least, there is nothing ridiculous about OH&S, only some of the people who are tasked, or think they are tasked with it, but really have NFI.
I seriously doubt that any of the truly ridiculous stuff comes from any Socialist agenda. Rather, I suspect, it comes from Insurance companies and over zealous junior managers.
    Cheers, Billy.
