I hate how this new junk beeps and dings and dongs like the drivers a retard. And there's nothing wrong with how a series landy handles or drives on the road except its lack of pace but then you don't drive one to go,fast do you . Haveing had both old landys and zooks they have a lot in commen slow noisy and basic but both very capable off road and both have a cult following for good reason
Relevent topic as I drove the XT ute in this morning, as I sit here smelling vaguely of exhaust fumes and warm oil it occurs to me that the biggest struggle with old vehicles is the dynamics in traffic. I can jump in the ute and comfortably drive it to Dubbo at 110KM/H but it is quite a chore to take it into Canberra in the traffic. Leaving enough space for the application time of the brakes that are boosted on the front only and having people cut you off is more taxing than driving a truck because at least in a truck you are bigger than them....
There's nothing quite like the sound of the V8 accelerating up the on ramps though :D:D

When my girlfriend drives her X Trail, I get nervous, there's arms waving wildly, music up, handsfree phone convos and she grabs for the phone for reading text messages. Aaaargh!
Oh, and sudden lane changes, cutting people off, failing to indicate...
When she drives the Perentie, despite it being far more valuable than a brand new X Trail, I am not nervous as she is a calm, considered, courteous and safe driver.
This 'connection' when driving is a real thing I reckon.
...and 460cixy is right, too many 'idiot alerts' dinging ringing beeping and donging to make up for the lack of awareness the driver typically has.
My Series Three is noisy, bumpy, smells of burning oil, is slow and thirsty. I can't listen to the radio when I'm driving and I am constantly repairing and maintaining it.
But I just love it and look for any excuse to take it for a drive. I drive new Hilux's and Pajero's at work and they just don't have the same feel about them as my Land Rover and to me are pretty oh hum.
Another thing is that older cars of any sort are recognizable from a distance. Nowadays work so many laws applicable they are looking alike with different grille designs
The majority of modern cars have all the character and excitement of a fridge.
I was going to make a post about how much fun the G Wagen is, but I am apparently "one Merc post away from being banned". :p
