Just thought I'd share this with you.
The boss drives a BMW, top of the range car thingy.
Well, early this week he gets a puncture. So, he calls RACV, but they wont help to the extent he thought they would. They dont deal with 19"/20" rims. Thus, they tow him back to the workshop to leave the car there, that way he can grab his Tojo to use.
Next morning, I arrive at work to see his car taking up two car spots, usual thought crosses my mind,, I move on.
Later that day, knock off time, I walk out to see him and the 2IC trying to get a jack under his rear tyre area. No go, too low.
He explains to me the tyres flat, and needs changingLooks fine to me. I know I wear glasses, buttt. I climb under to have a closer look, and sure enough, the inside of the rim looks knackered, lots of rubber everywhere, and the inside of the tyre cut to shreads.
So, I offer to get the fork, we'll lift it onto some blocks of timber and then he can do what he needs.
So, we need to get the car onto flat ground, but he's a bit dubious about driving it but we get there.
Then I find out the jack we are using to get the tyre off with is 2IC"s Holden scissor jack
Its seems, the BMW doesnt come with a jack,,, or a spare wheel for that matter. They run a major battery/electrical system in the spare wheel section of the boot, so no room for such things as wheels and tools.
Thus, the tyres are Run-Flat, hence making it look like it was at full pressure when I looked at it, and also why the RACV would'nt touch it
Im sure he told me these things are worth like $1200 or there abouts
Now that just justifies running standard tyres/rims. What would happen if you got a flat out in the middle of no-where?? Stuff that.

I laugh at all this junk with space saver spares . Say your going away boots packed and you get a flat. You pull all your **** out to change the tyre. Where the **** do you put the full size wheel you just took off? Sure as **** won't fit in the boot

SubscriberThat's the reason I steered clear of Audi BMW and Mercedes because none of them come with a spare tyre and the Discovery did. Turned out it's a better car all round anyway hahah

Full size wheels fit into the same hole. You just need to leave out the tray with the tools and/or the boot floor sits higher.
Space savers are to save the manufacturer a few $ while increasing their published boot space and decreasing their published weight. All my cars have full-size spares even if they didn't come to me that way. Spare rim from the wreckers, tyre with best tread from first tyre change and viola. No way I'm relying an a tyre that can only do 80km/h for an hour.
That said. I haven't had a flat in 5 years. Two years ago I found a screw just like the ones my brother was using outside his house in the front tyre of my then new car. Tyre was still up, drove to local tyre fitter and sorted.
Wife killed a tyre late last year. Within 1km from home, got home before it went completely flat.

Saw a classic example of that yesterday.
A bloke had a flat on the left rear of his Porsche in the side street just near our office.
(Quite a steep slope on the street - apologies to Clarkson- I was surprised it did not roll off the jack when he raised it - personally I would have rolled it slowly down to the bottom of the hill).
Anyway, he removed the rather wide wheel / tyre and replaced it with something that looked skinnier than what's on my garden wheelbarrow - and stood scratching his head trying to figure out where to put the flat tyre / wheel, as it definitely wasn't going to fit in where the spare came out of.
Eventually laid back the passenger seat backrest and jammed the wheel / tyre in on the passenger seat - it was a tight fit.
He was definitely not amused (and he got his armani suit dirty in the process).
My young bloke's Mazda RX7 has similar problems, especially with the size wheels / tyres he has on that thing. But at least in the Mazda, there is still enough room on the "parcel shelf" if you lift the hatchback to squeeze a wheel / tyre in there to get you out of trouble. In his case - it's all wheel. The tyres look like they're painted on.

SubscriberMini is the same, no spare, no jack, no tools, and to add to this farce, a one off tyre size, a couple had a flat in Helensburgh in their Mini, the tyre guy at Helensburgh Tyres let the couple leave their car there while he ordered their new tyre, there was a 3 day delivery for the tyre, so the couple had to get accommodation for that period, cutting there 5 day holiday short.
The only good part of this, the flat happened 100mtrs from Helensburgh Tyres on the old Princes Hwy.

SubscriberYeah sorry the Q7s have a spare but from what I was told it was only speed limited to 80kmh for 80kms so that's why I class it as no spare haha but yeah I wanted a full size spare living out west it can be a pain having no spare.
