I'll get back to you on that. I need to consult my son. He's the one studying psychology. His thesis topic is to do with the dynamics of internet forums and how they evolve. A life's study I reckon.

I think it's fascinating to compare Usenet with web based discussions. Lessons relearned, again and again. The dynamics certainly changed with the web and the access to the Internet of non-technical people.

mate i spend a fair bit of time on overlander myself and that guy who got nasty is in general a pain in tha ass. too uptight and know it all. mos tof the guys i know from the forum take anything said with a grain of salt and are pretty relaxed. that bloke is not one of them.

btw defenders are still the best. bloody ugly to most but bbeautiful to their owners.

Our "Mate" from overlander would probably fit into a dozen of those categories

Well it sounds like I'm not the only one to have dealings with this guy.
The general concensus is the same all round.
So it's not just me.
In general I find the forum ok, it's only the one person that I've had a problem with.

as in life no matter how hard you try there are just some people who clash.

But in here being a written comment it is open for all to see,(and comment on) and is sometimes read in a manner that it wasnt written in.

I normally stay right out of those threads. There is nothing to be gained, except a big postcount.

But this time he went too far. We'll see if & how he responds to to the threat of a Landrover upstaging his car. Hope he lives in Sydney.

I just bought my copy. Still reading it. Good to see the Landies finally getting some good kudos from what I always thought was a patrol biased mag. :?

I have a question for the engineer mob among us though.

The custom landie runs a Rover V8 with "cross bolted main bearings".

Can somebody explain this to me please?

Every engine I have ever pulled to bits has either 2 (usually) or 4 bolts that secure the main bearing halves to the crankcase. This means the bolts are vertical when the engine is in situ. Does "cross bolted" mean that the bolts are horizontal? This would apply sheer stresses rather than tensile stresses on the bolts. Is there an advantage to cross bolting? Is it a custom process or are these engines designed this way from the start?
