    OK, let's see how good your memory of the Leaving Certificate is.

    Why were there 28,742 candidates sitting the English paper in 1965 and only 6,895 in 1966?

    Yes and no.

    That still doesn't really explain why there were 22k fewer candidates. Either that or it doesn't explain why there were any candidates at all.

    I did my high schooling at Salisbury State High School in Qld and finished the Senior (6th Form - equivalent to Leaving Certificate) in 1964.

    That makes you younger than me. I was already at uni in 1964.

    Quite possibly. I was 16 when I finished. I started Uni when I was 18 doing BSc (Tech) at night. One couldn't get an engineering degree doing Uni of NSW at night, only a BSc. I was also going to tech college full time during the day, started Tech the day I turned 17.
