The head Chop after 27 years

My single sister was crying on the phone as she informed my the company she works for is changing hands and redundancies are definite. 27 years of loyal service as a process worker. 51 years old and waiting for 2 new knees on the long waiting list. New owners aren't sure if they will take any old employees on, and they will have to take a medical. It's going to be tough going as health and age are against her. The Dole will not even cover her rent. July 31st is the chop day.
Bloody tough for some people, and Abbott wants them to work till their seventies?
Redundancy is 12 weeks pay,( minimum wage earner too) plus 1 week extra for being over 45.
Long service leave was taken when she was entitled to it, going to be tough on her own

Happens a lot at the moment.....

One of my brothers will lose his job shortly,he is in a lab, does mainly oil testing.A private company not a govt. organisation.
Has been at the place almost 30yrs.
Difficult for him as well,he is 52.

In our business,we are also doing it very tough. We had a few govt contracts, held many for over 20yrs.
The Newman govt. has decided to roll all the smaller contracts into state wide huge contracts. This disadvantages the many small and medium sized businesses that used to have the work.It is beyond me how this is 'value for money'.Suppose we will have to wait and see....

It's just disgusting what's happening at the moment not good at all feel for her!! We just had some cut backs to in our company working for a major mining company with the CEO coming out and saying we need to work harder and be more productive to stay in business. How patronizing while he sits in his office on $12 mill plus bonuses and says work harder, just a load of crap I bet they aren't working any harder. All driven by the share market making sure each new CEO makes his stamp and makes record profit and picks up a big bonus!!

Is there a union involved? Try and get one and if there is ask WTF they are doing.
A few questions should be asked, is the whole workforce being made redundant? The reason for this is, then they can select who stays (reemployed) and goes, along with the roles.
Is her award registered? If so those conditions for that job carry over until a new award is made.
Our cleaners , over a decade ago , where originally part of the main company, the job got contracted out, the cleaners kept the same pay and conditions, the next contractor took over and after negotiation any new cleaners where on a lower wage, the originals kept their conditions but have almost all taken the voluntary redundancy.
The more successful unions keep a lawyer on the books as a strike or any other action at work is very difficult to get approval for, whereas getting company action deemed illegal makes them more willing to talk, in some cases.

As to giving out statewide contracts, it's been proven as a path to stupidity, higher costs and longer delays.
Relative works for a Nsw dept. who in the past used to handle all their repairs locally using locals (virtually all trades)with a blacklist of incompetent subbies. This went to a state contractor who hiring the cheapest put on all the blacklisted subbies, resulting in jobs taking 3-5 times as long as they needed to be done 2 or 3 times or fell apart. It took 2 years to get back to the subbies they used before then another 12 months later the statewide contract goes to another company who again hire the blacklisted subbies, and it all starts again.
