Canvas is waterproof for a start and they describe these as being. that would be the first test I would do before going further. Just my opinion
I bought a set of car seat covers ( Ebay)that were described as canvas and when they arrived was disappointed to see that they were an ultra thin Dacron type material. So I left neutral feedback which prompted this email
the canvas we use for the seatcovers is the Genuine Australian Army DPCU Canvas without lining. For reference please see;-

We purchased the left over material which was used to manufacture uniforms & backbacks for the Australian Army in Afghanistan.
for further reference, also please see;-

I would greatly appreciate if you would revise your feedback to +ve
Our Ebay is set up to automatically give you +ve feedback when we receive +ve feedback
I have an ex army haversack here that is nothing like the seat covers. but it is this type.

My question is, can a material that is not woven or cotton based be legally called canvas? Has the army got synthetic material that could be called canvas?
Here is the product I bought & I think they are trying to BS me.

Good quality canvas is cotton, the cheap stuff like they use on imported camper trailers and tents is a polyester/cotton blend mostly more polyester than cotton.
In ye olden times they used flax (linen ) and hemp to make canvas.

If it's not cotton or hemp and not woven I would contend that it isn't canvas. DPCU just means disruptive pattern combat uniform and says nothing about the material.
This is the link to the company that has the contract to produce Australian defence uniforms, they do not describe any of their fabrics as canvas.

Thanks to all, especially AnD3rew, I emailed them back telling them the feedback sticks. We have 100% feedback on over 600 transactions, so I can live without their feedback..- and I didn't contact them first as there is the opportunity to avoid the negative feedback ( ie offer a refund)

From Wikipedia:
Modern canvas is usually made of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton"]Cotton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] or [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linen"]Linen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame], although historically it was made from [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp"]Hemp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]. It differs from other heavy cotton fabrics, such as [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denim"]Denim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame], in being [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_weave"]Plain weave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] rather than [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twill"]Twill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]. Canvas comes in two basic types: plain and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_duck"]Cotton duck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]. The threads in duck canvas are more tightly woven. The term duck comes from the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language"]Dutch language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] word for cloth, doek. In the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States"]United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame], canvas is classified in two ways: by weight (ounces per square yard) and by a graded number system. The numbers run in reverse of the weight so a number 10 canvas is lighter than number 4.
Not sure what this means in your case.
