Can it be done ? Defender Handbrake.

Never really had a problem with it , maybe it is because i am a short arse [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]
But when i saw this thread i got excited as i thought you lot were going to talk about changing the handbrake from drum to disc [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]

Well I'm sorry to disappoint you, but feel free to, if you like.

drum brakes are better due to greater surface area of friction material
and require less pressure to apply than disc brakes


why would you want to convert to disc anyway?

I was wondering the same thing but assumed there may have been a good reason. Maybe I was wrong.

Main reason is because in the UK they get filled with mud and crap and then after about 2 months stop working and you have to replace the shoes. So every time it gets to the MOT you have to strip down the hand brake drum and replace most of it. Including the actuator which cost a fortune .
Land Rovers in th UK are well known for not having working Hand Brakes. So you never park and Landy with out leaving it in gear
If you have Disc you could clean it out alot easer so that they would not block up
very much the same reason as to why most people take of the rear drum axel on 90's and replace them with Range Rover rear axels (or disco ones but you get the idea)

Would have changed it by now but thought i had better not as Queensland transport might not like it . So i thought i would wait untill i had got it into Aus and all done and then **** around with it.
But by the sounds of things you lot don't have the same problem as us with handbrakes

full of mud or not nothing should wear out due to the fact it is only applied when not moving. no friction anywhere, no worn shoes.
corrosion however is a different story. also we dont have salt on our roads
here which will probably make a difference.

Ah should have explained better. They get full of mud you then put them on and the get jamed and won't come of (back to the acuator problem). So hence they nacker themselves

however lots of cars have mechanical disc brakes as hand brakes such as the ford falcon out here.

shouldnt be too hard to graft on to a landy.

yeah already know how to do it and it is with a Ford. The ford fiesta has cable operated calipers so use one of their disc and caliper and you can use the same hand brake lever. Also the caliper mounts match up with bolts in the back of the tranfer box. So easy to bolt on
