For what reason should he have stayed isolated?

I don't know anything more than the snippet I heard on the news tonight, but one possible answer to your question could be that it depends on what was used as the reason for the decision to quarantine her in the first place.

If the decision was based on sound science then she is being irresponsible. If it was based on nothing more than the need for the authorities to be seen to be doing something (even if it is unnecessary), then she may be trying to show the stupidity of the decision to insist on isolating her.

Hasn't she been tested at least twice and shown to be free from the virus?

    EDIT: Yes, it was Ebola.

Anyone bothered to take a look at this person's background ? (assuming it's the same woman I read about...)

What US govt. organisation did she work for before, and to what rank or qualification did she attain? Is she still part of it or not, if not, why not?

    Answers might be interesting...

Disclaimer:- From previous experience in a news organisation, be assured that background to the story is always more significant than the 'headlines'.. but does'nt sell, so it's usually ignored. Or buried.

Can't see the issue. She was cleared of having ebola, so why stay quarantined? It can't even be transmitted until after the symptoms appear anyway. Mass hysteria.

That she was an Officer of the American CDC, Center for Diseases Control adds a bit of shading to her (published) attitude and sensibilities...
    - Did someone mention "Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer"?

Here's a pic of her from a 2012 CDC gabfest, page 139, 5th row down, second one across. She is one of around 80 graduates who put up with a two-year training program. Did she have a 'Sea-Change' and quit it all and go Nursing in Africa? Very altruistic of her, and a shame on the US govt for treating her so badly...

To me it is not so much about ebola as such but her attitude. There are lots of stupid stuff that the law makers do but we comply. I hate lots of laws but need to comply for society. Why is she different. Yes in the past people have broken rules to make a statement. But in this case I think a better strategy would be to stay in isolation and then say I told you so?.

I suppose that since it is happening in the USA we should not be surprised that it has been treated as a legal issue rather than a medical issue.

Seems the nurse's stand has been vindicated.

Ebola crisis: Girl, 11, successfully treated at Australian-run centre

AN 11-year-old girl has become the first patient to be successfully treated for Ebola at the Australian-run centre in Sierra Leone.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop today confirmed a girl named Aminata Bangura has returned to her family, with a clean bill of health, after being treated at the centre in the nation's capital of Freetown.
