You are correct, it does have to be put into prospective.
A thousand people have died; in the same period, of time nearly a million have died from Malaria, depending on what figures you believe.
In my experience I think the reason Ebola is so feared is 3 fold:
No known cure
Attrition rate of up to 90%, dependant on strain
The way you die. Nasty.
500 children under 5 die A DAY in Uganda due to all the other reasons applicable with a developing nation, PNG is much the same although figures are unknown given the mess this country is in.
So a thousand people in 7 months could be seen as not many but of course has the potential to blow out?
Cheers Jerry

Sad as it might be, no one really cares about Africa. So why Invest money on a drug that no one can afford.
If if ever did make its way to the US for example, mass production of a vaccine would be done if a % of the population became ill.
Nasty business. I don't think the snide comments about the profit motive in general and US companies, Monsanto, in particular were very constructive. What is constructive, is the work the dedicated people employed by these companies do for humanity. /rant

Apparently Ebola is similar to the Hendra virus, so Aust has a head start on developing a vaccine.
