Thumbs up fuel economy 300tdi/exhaust temperatures.

Have just come back from a short trip to Nimbin via O'rielly's & duck creek road. and running creek/lyons road back on the pacific motorway. I got 410 kms on my 42 liter sub tank before i changed over, it probably still has a liter or two in it. so fuel economy is OK, about 10 l/100 kms. there was some long grueling hills in the mountains, full throttle in 5 th or 4th or 3rd for along time, maximum exhaust temp was about 580 deg c, I have new intercooler from APT and some minor fuel pump adjustments done. I ran the AC most of the time, and noticed the temperature gauge hardly went above 85 deg even on the long hills. I suppose the temperature being mid twenties was a big help. I saw a what looked like a new black defender in the garage at kyogle when i stopped for directions. Beautiful scenery all round that area, stopped at Byron bay, visited the light house , the town was full on holiday mode. Had a good value lunch at the pub right in town, good food and a good price.

    EGT

Not sure what brand it is, but it was not expensive, it' goes to 1200 deg C, I would have preferred a unit that goes to only 800 deg C. The probe is tapped into the top of the Exh manifold just before the inlet to the turbo charger. Some people put them on the small removable plate. But I decided against it when I noted how deep the hole is under that plate, I was worried the probe would not be in the gas flow. When I'm cruising at 100 kms/h on flat ground its reading about 400 dec C, and I've got 10 -12 psi boost. I have another digital gauge i might rig up temporarily (taped to the bonnet or run through the window) for comparison.
I'm in process today fitting my madman turbo kit, it was supplied with a port for an exhaust probe. I might put another one in so I can compare the probes, and fit a plug when I'm done.

I have the original manifolds/turbo off and the exhaust pipe disconnected. I hope to finish assembly tomorrow. I'll take some photos as i go and post them. The 2256 VNT Garrett is a beautiful thing, I can't wait to see how it performs.
