Question What Would you use to clear odour in water tank?

We have a 3500L water tank which doesn't get used much. Consequently the water is "stale/stagnant", & the other day I noticed an odour.
Basically I just used the water from the tank for washing the car when we had water restrictions a few years ago. It is not used for drinking.
Spoke to a plumber mate of mine & he suggested Aquasafe, but at $50/Litre, I thought it was a bit dear.
So I was just wondering whether any forum members had any ideas?
    Thanks, Pickles.

Not an expert opinion but years ago when our main house tank got a bit smelly I pumped the water out the bottom and back in to the top with a splashy jet of water to thoroughy mix and aerate the contents. Plenty of oxygen kills the anaerobic bacteria that breed in the deoxygenated stagnant bottom water. You could also weight down a compressor hose and let it bubble through for a while although it might get the compresor a bit hot. Its basically what you'd do to a fish tank.

I've heard of people using a sachet of Pool Shock in a tank. Cost about five bucks from your local swimming pool shop.

    smelly tank

I recommend drain the tank and hose out well, make it clean.

Wash out with water and domestic bleach, ( it contains sodium hypocrite), or use some pool chlorine. No need to use a lot about 2 % concentration should do.

Leave the tank empty until the rain comes, (or a few days). when the tank has some water in it put a little bleach in there. Most domestic town water is dosed with chlorine, ( available in domestic bleach), for biological growth control.

You could get some Borax from Woolies/Coles. About $5 from memory. Looks like sugar crystals.

Do a Google on how to use it to clean tanks. Yachties use it when someone puts Diesel in the water tanks by mistake. Gets rid of odours and bad taste.

Empty it and clean it out.
You'll probably find a dead critter floating around in there.
    Probably a frog.
    Then wait for rain.

Definitely needs a clean, do you still have the mosquito mesh on the top? Only good for the garden, at the moment. How big is it? Bob

Just saw the first post, teach me for jumping in. Still a health hazard, must be cleaned.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
