I used to do that but I no longer own a suit and, until recently when my wife made me buy a pair for a wedding, I didn't even own a long pair of pants other than 2 pair of jeans, one of them being reinforced and armoured motorcycling jeans.

I did have a long pair of pants for our son's funeral but they weren't that dressy. As I don't own any long sleeved shirts or anything suitable for wearing with a tie, I wore a sports shirt and no tie. We wanted it to be a less formal event. Some people arrived in, and wore, leathers or other protective gear and that was fine by my wife and I as many of the attendees were motorcyclists.

I don't own a suit either, but I do believe in turning up at funerals (and weddings) neatly attired. As for texting and using a mobile phone during the service............NOT ON!!!! It shows lack of social skills and is rude in the extreme.

Our property is "blessed" with no phone reception.


We recently had some friends round to visit, with their kids. Acreage is great fun to play and explore, but the 14yo son was visibly anxious and agitated because he couldn't text. Actually showing withdrawal symptoms!

Ahhh mobile phones.

The only communications device invented so we can ignore the person next to us...

Perhaps they were keeping up with the goings on on AULRO, maybe had a serious LR issue that needed resolving!

its not just funerals etc, I get really frustrated when out with wife for dinner and she takes a photo of dinner and puts it up on FB!

I yearn for the days of etiquette, dressing correctly for an event or time of day and such.

I have my suits and shirts made, shoes too. I'm far from made of money but an investment in such items goes a long way. My shoes are 14 years old, been resoled once in that time and they do get worn, a good suit or two made in a classic style will last as long as you fit it (stored correctly at least) and when shirt cuffs or collars are worn or stained it goes back to the maker and they are replaced, don't need a whole shirt.

As for phones at funerals, weddings even. Don't get me started.

My phone goes into aeroplane mode before turning it off just in case it turns back on.
Always a suit & tie for weddings & funerals, you can always lose the jacket / tie / both if feeling overdressed.

Ah yes, its better to be dressed up than Dressed Down.
