The South American model/
Just read a book from the '60s, in which a character hangs his cossies on an 'old' landies 'width indicator'. I can see that a thingo on the front wings to tell you if you'll fit through a gap might be useful, but haven't heard of them. Anyone got a picture?

This is a width indicator.
If you drive into a gap that is too narrow, it moves the gap out of the way.

hey were not only for landies, I think what you mean is the little stick/pole with a white ball on the top used to be on the corner of cars, trucks and buses to help see where the corner was cant seem to find a picture of them
edit: some had little lights instead.
Like this?
Yes, although usually used on cars where the LH front corner cannot be seen from the driver's seat rather than a Landrover, where the front corner is clearly visible, although they could be useful with a spare on the bonnet.
