Diesels need maintenance?
Don't forget the diesel advantage is greater the harder offroad you go. I got 9.5L/100km over the Simpson.
Ok guys, I've sat back listened to you all rave about the wonderful milage your getting from your diesels. Even when I consider that diesel is around 10 cents a litre dearer it still looks good on paper.
Now, what about maintenance on these beast, what are the real costs? Average service? Timming belts? what other things need perodic replacment that is different from a petrol version?
Regards
Rob

The cost of maintenance far out weighs the cost of repair.

Are we talking about the cost of maintenance if you do the work, or if you pay someone else to do it? I can comment on the cost of self servicing. First of all i will say that the cost of parts and the cost of rebuilding a diesel are much greater than a petrol, but a well serviced diesel will last for as long. People say the cost of rebuilding a TDi engine is in the ball park of $6000-$7000. A petrol, maybe half that, i dont really know.
As for standard serviving, i just bought all the oils i need to service the whole vehicle, from caltex, in 20ltr quantities for a little over $300, with a drum pump. Now the oils for gear box, diffs and transfer case will last for ages, the 20ltrs for the engine will last say 6-12 months, that covers the cost of oil. Filters etc are easy, give around 3-4 oil filters, 3-4 air filters (this will differ depending on where you drive), and 2-3 fuel filters tops. All up for filters you would be looking at a coupla hundred. Then you have to factor in all the stuff you will do regardless of engine, like wheel bearings, greasing things etc. As for regular wear and tear, i cant say i have only owned it for 2-3 months. Since then, i have had to replace the fuel lift pump ($100) and rebuild the power steering box ($180. Around $1000 if you paid your mechanic to do it) and $20 to replace the power steering fluid line from the reservoir to the box. If i had to put a figure on it, i would say in the vacinity of $1000 based on me doing the work(could easily be trippled if you paid a mechanic), this would allow for small unexpected repairs and wear and tear. As for petrol i couldnt say. Matt

Hi Guys
Not quite the answer, but in a recent newspaper article on vehicle costs by the RAC WA the tojo turbodiesel wagon weighed in at a hefty $320 a week to run(from memory, aproximately),the ****an equivelent was something like $275 a week.
Before you say you are joking, apparently this included everything,insurance/depreciation/running costs etc.Apparently, depreciation is the big killer. For example in this weeks Quokka there is a 1999 Rangerover 4lt for $29990(warranty waived). If you were the one who bought it new in 1999,and allowing for the dealers profit margins, how many dollars have you burned in depriciation over 5 years?????? OK it may be a high km or abused vehicle, but it is a huge drop in value, how much would it have cost new $80000 on the road?????????
