A snorkel, would only keep the motor dry, a snorkel is a waste of time when the ECU is lower than the air intake. I suppose if Jason hadnt gotten stuck in the middle the water might not have had time to get through the door seals and into the ecu, i suppose thats the case when fording a creek etc, a snorkel keeps the water out of the engine so you can keep moving, but if you get stuck or you have poor door seals then the snorkel aint going to save youre ecu. Yeah, it was only when Jason got hung up on the top of the rutt that he stopped and the water had the time to seep through the door seals, as long as you keep moving youre are fine. But then again when you are in a petrol, all you need is some water on a peice of electrical gear and you stop in your tracks. I see the only benefit to a snorkel on a petrol is to mildly raise the wading depth, after all you cant move all the electrics to a roof console, wetting the ecu isnt the only way to stop a petrol car in water, and to keep clean air coming in, especially when following a car on a dirt road. Dont get me wrong, but a snorkel on a petrol is limited by the depth at which vital electrics in the engine bay get wet, which generally isnt that much higher than the OE air intake. Matt

There's another benefit to a snorkel and that's if you do stop, even with a wet ECU or whatever reason, then you won't suck water into the engine. That would be *really* expensive.

I sold my '96 Pajero earlier this year for $19k. And the Rangie, a '97, is worth $23k. Impressive depreciation! Maybe I'll pick up an '00 Rangie in a couple of years, replace the Astra with it :-)

I understand that in respect to costly repairs, a snorkel will prevent the most expensive of all, but what im trying to get at is, wadeing through deep water in a petrol engines vehicle is risky business, and why would you wade through something so deep when you are going to get stuck in the middle with flooded electrics, snorkel or not.
