    Within 200 km of Melbourne

I'll be down that way between Xmas and the New Year visting family and friends.

There I have a friend and her 10 yo daughter who have suggested that they would like to go camping. A new experience for them and huge responsibility for me. I have all the camping gear but no local knowledge.

So I need to find somewhere with a reasonable degree of comfort. This could be the beginning of a wonderful relationship so I don't want to put them off this idea for life. Sites with toilets are a good start.

I have visited www.parkweb.vic.gov.au and selected as possibilities:

Bunyip State Park, Mount Samaria State Park and Creswick Regional Park

I figure that inland will be less crowded than the coast but that is only a suspicion.

Any advice or recommendations will be gratefully received,
    Mahn England

Lake Eildon is a great place to camp, but last time I was there (6 months)
the lake was very (VERY) low, we had some decent rains in the last six months so it may be much better now.

Lots of camp sites around Bonni-Doon ( & Nothern end of lake ).
Mount Pinagar (spelling) is a great lookout over the dam wall
and southern part of lake. Eildon town has a good pub with
accomodation and theres boat launching fishing , swimming at Snobbs Creek. ** Sorry -Should read Jerusalem Creek**

If you see a black Fender around there , give us a wave or CH 15 ..

    Davo,

I have seen Eildon at altitude doing the commute in the bus with wings.

The last time in May it was barely a puddle.

There seems to be a lot of good country there.

    Thanks for the "heads up"

Should we end up there I will keep an eye out and the channel open.

If Eildon turns out to be dry , there's a sh$tload of tracks to the east.
East from Mansfield gets you to Mirrimbah and Mt Buller.
East from Howqua follows the river up into the hills with heaps of camping.
East from Jamies on to Licola sorta follows the Jamieson river more camping.
All have heaps and heaps of good tracks.

But if you want to tread softly with your "friend" might be wise to stick to the tourist camp sites with toilets and showers etc ..

Got a nod and a wink today, from someone who was at Eildon two weeks ago.

The Dam is only 40% full, so stilll rather empty looking.
