Purchasing a new Defender Extreme vs a new Discovery

Hi.

I've just joined this group. It's good to find a local Land Rover group. (Local meaning Aussie)

I'm considering buying a replacement for my 1998 Discovery. I like the Discovery, but I'm not sold on the high tech features of the newer models, particularly after some of the stories I heard about the Series 2 Discovery and its lack of a CDL.

The Defender, of course, has a CDL and looks more like a "real" Land Rover.

I was just after people's first hand experience comparing the two.

Your first decision WeeGraeme
would be whether to wait for D3 to appear.
And if you can afford it,,,

theres really no alternative.
The new D3 will do ANYTHING a defender can do. 8)

that should stir the possums,,,

I think it all depends on what you want to do with it, if its touring you will be doing the defender is a better choice due to the room, if its everyday city driving with some weekend off roading, a disco is a good choice due to the comfort whilst driving all the time. It 6 of one half a dozen of the other really, just choose which ever you want based on what fits your needs the best. If i am not mistaken later model series II's had the centre diff lock reinstated, Slip Slop the diff lock's back, or something like that. So if you are looking at buying a new disco, then it should have centre diff lock, only the early series II's didnt have them, something about ETC being enough, rubbish. Matt

I'd trade cross axle diff locks for ETC, but certainly not the centre diff lock.
I love my diff lock

As as ACE said, it is really a question of want you are planning to use it for.

You can get a CDL kit for the early Series II discos that did not have it available from the factory. It is relatively inexpensive. Alternatively, you should be able to screw down a LR dealer for a good deal on a runout Disco S2

Do you want petrol or diesel? You can make a TD5 go harder than the old V8 anyway.

If you are a bigbugga (>6 foot) the Fender might be a bit tight. Are you wanting to put people in the back?

At the end of day, despite Pedro's stirring, the Fender will go further than the disco, especially a S2 with that big arse.

Either way, you cannot lose!

Yeah, go the Defender. Keep away from the Disco- Soft Roader. As you say the Defender is a real 4x4.
Cheers Tyrepower.
