    Decentralization

Instead of everyone’s data being contained on huge central servers owned by a large organization, local servers (“pods”) can be set up anywhere in the world. You choose which pod to register with - perhaps your local pod - and seamlessly connect with the diaspora* community worldwide.

    Freedom

You can be whoever you want to be in diaspora*. Unlike some networks, you don’t have to use your real identity. You can interact with whomever you choose in whatever way you want. The only limit is your imagination. diaspora* is also Free Software, giving you liberty to use it as you wish.

    Privacy

In diaspora* you own your data. You do not sign over any rights to a corporation or other interest who could use it. With diaspora*, your friends, your habits, and your content is your business ... not ours! In addition, you choose who sees what you share, using Aspects.

Government would love to control all media outlets. IS have done themselves no favours releasing that kind of content. Western brainwashed kids seem to be running the show and they are clearly doing it to feel significant. Back home they would be working in a mobile phone shop. In these videos addressing obama we can see them serving their egos whilst destroying their cause. Services like Diaspora gives them a voice, true. But we get to see them directly for what they are instead of only receiving a government approved narrative. Freedom of speech is important and I would rather live in a world where any one can get a message out over one where you can easily be gagged. If people want to use these outlets to expose their crimes, so be it. It will be easier to prosecute them with good conscience.

ISIS were using Twitter, and when they started shutting down sites with terrorist content, ISIS went to Diaspora. Diaspora consists of a series of " pods ", each controlled by its own administrator, called podmins. as I read it. The creators of Diaspora have convinced some of the larger pods to remove ISIS content, but are having difficulty reaching smaller pods. And when they do, it is up to the podmins what they do with the content.

As I see it, there is no regulation regarding content in these pods. And, seemingly, no restriction on who can administrate a pod. I know regulation of the media is a no - no for many, but this doesn't seem right , in the light of what has been posted in some pods, Bob
