    Travel Insurance ?

    Gday All,

Looking at different options of travel insurance for our trip at new year. I am offered it with my new credit card so going into the bank to see what the catch is. Anyone used that type before ?

Also to those with experience in this what are the main things and the things that are not worth looking at.

    Thanks in advance

    Cheers Ean

Paid for several trips now with our credit card and used the credit card travel insurance.
Have even had a couple of claims, and these were paid out after an amount of form filling and toing and froing. But I don't think this was any more than if we'd gone through a non credit card travel insurance.
Last claim was for a rather expensive ring the missus lost, probably while passing through Kuala Lumpur international airport.
    Card insurance came through.

Read the fine print and push for your rights. Like all insurance companies, they all try to bluff you out of an appropriate payout.

Other thing to remember is that despite paying extra for travel insurance, the majority of us never ever claim on it.
And several hundred bucks not spent on travel insurance is more to spend on the holiday.

Ive heard AusPost travel insurance is pretty good to go with, just watch out my partner had insurance when she went to Thailand and her bag got lost but the travel insurance had a $250 excess but only covered $300 for bags so it wasnt worth to claim the lost bag haha. But we have never used it for anything else.

The last couple of trips we have used the Credit card travel insurance rather than buying additional insurance (no claims made). I think we had to pay for the flights on the card that had the insurance attached to qualify though.

    Thanks Mark,

Yeh you have to pay for your travel with the card. That suits me as we use the card anyway so why not get the benefits if they are offered. Will head into the bank today and check it out.

If you're going to get it, get it now, not the week before.

If for whatever reason you can't go, you should get a refund etc of air fares paid in advance. Check the fine print but that's usually the case.

Won't apply of course if you get the insurance at the last minute, after you've spent the money.

And have the phone number, email address, & policy number on you somewhere. If you end up in a foreign hospital. someone else can start the claim process, the insurance company will get you home.

Also, be very careful to read the fine print of what it does actually cover you for. For example, any kind of medical cover for the USA usually costs at least twice as much as for the rest of the world.
If you have private health insurance, can you extend it to cover you overseas? For example, BUPA is an international company.
If you take credit card or airline travel insurance, what is actually covered?
Might also be worth checking the travel insurance from motoring organizations such as RACQ or NRMA, if you are a member, as there can be discounts for members.
My advice is to have multiple sources of funds lined up in case it all goes pear-shaped.
I know someone who went down with a very rare disease while travelling in China. Ironically, he had gotten the disease in Australia during an operation in a hospital. He nearly died as his organs started shutting down. His travel insurance paid to fly him with a nurse in a private plane to Bangkok and put him up in the best hospital there for three months while he got the best possible care. They eventually found his disease (only a dozen reported cases a year worldwide) and he was eventually able to return to OZ, where it took another six months of rehab. before he was back to normal.
Imagine the costs involved if he hadn't had good travel insurance. Makes me sick thinking about it.

When we did our trip to the US earlier this year we went with NRMA. Didnt need to claim but they were competitive and easy to deal with. If you google there are a couple of insurers with lots of horror stories about people having difficulty claiming after an incident, NRMA seemed top have a reasonable claims record.

Couple of years ago we went to Kota Kinabalu. On the way over our 2yr old vomited over my wife in the plane to start the holiday. A few days later, a rising temp and some more vomits and we discovered she had a terrible ear infection.

Ended up having to delay our flights, stay longer and do a number of trips to specialists etc.

We used Covermore and they paid up no problem. Did have to fill in a lot of forms.

To complete the story, on the way back my daughter vomited all over my lap. No insurance to compensate for that!
