About 18m ago I purchased an externally powered multiport usb device. One of the manufacturer's claims was the 'suede' plastic finish. That was the least of any purchase criteria if at all...

The device does all it is supposed to. However, the plastic finish has deteriorated and can be easily removed with a light fingernail scratch. It has also become sticky. Try wiping it with a damp rag and the rag gets caught in the surface material. Same thing happened to the exterior of a "Kathmandu" brand insulated coffee mug ...that was less than 6m old!

Today I had to remove the centre facia bezel from the dash of the P38. Its surface has deteriorated similarly, as has the window switch pad on the console behind the gear selector. When i removed the facia, the area around the holes for the attachment screws is severely cracked in every case to the extent that one section came away in my hand. I have put a thin coat of JBWeld 2-part epoxy cement on the underside in an effort to maintain some sort of structural integrity.

I contacted the local jagRover spares fellow well known to Brisbaneites and other qlders. He
tells me that ALL the spare facia bezels he's retrieved from the 'front cuts' of late ...Jags and
Range Rovers are in similar state "and it's becoming a real problem..."
I have read complaints in the past about Jap products and some early BMWs...but it doesn't seem to be restricted to the auto industry.

Would welcome any advice as to how to prevent/treat the deterioration... or is it part of the recycle frenzy...
