The latest is that the AM came from a Russian registered freighter, that didn't pay it's Port fees, and had it's cargo of AM confiscated . The cargo was destined for a port in Africa. No one in Beirut wanted to take responsibility for it, so they passed the buck, until .....BOOM!.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

I'm thinking if Newcastle was in Victoria there would be an avalanche of protest over that one.

Good to see we agree then.

I also like the black pot and kettle arrangement with you Bob - you're the first to chuck rocks at any other place happily - including your reply to me, but when anyone else does or responds to these, you're also the first to get indignant about it all - either stop chucking the rocks, or let the replies slide - you can't have it both ways.

Parts of the truck and trailer were scattered up to two kilometres away. The explosion was heard and shook houses 88km away in Moura and 55km away in Theodore.
I wonder if that Ronald Holzberger was a rellie of Arthur and Toots Holzheimer who ran Peninsula Transport, the Cape York service for many years in Leyland Hippos. Toots in her signature floral dress and Blucher boots.

I recall the news at the time saying the biggest part of the truck found was the one tonne engine (Cummins 855) quite some distance away.

Edit - My apologies. I got my Holzbergers and Holzheimers confused.

    Pink Ammonium Nitrate Prill

Guess we wont really know the cirumstances until an authority identifies how the AN was stored.

when I was a boy many of the miners would "dress" their lawns with prilled AN. it was mixed with diesolene and would turn pink and it wasnt unusual to see pink lawns.

I used to have to go into the ampho shed as it was known to check and lube the machinery.....I was never really comfortable.

As you are probably aware, ammonium nitrate is hygroscopic, even prilled AN manufactured for use as ANFO, ie. absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. The pink colouration is due to the addition of chemicals after prilling to indicate that it has been exposed to moisture.
AN, whether for use as a fertiliser or as an explosive compound is not classified as an Explosive under Dangerous Goods legislation, it is Classified as an Class 5.1 Oxidising Agent. It is well known, that quantities above a certain mass will, when involved in a fire combust explosively. There are many well documented cases of this occurring worldwide.

I am a former ICI employee, worked with explosives & a former DG Inspector, including Explosives Inspector
