Group A Touring Cars

Now....just hear me out!!!

Am I the only person in Australia that misses the old Group A Touring Car format (the ones prior to the V8 Supercars and Super Tourers)?

I love V8s, but god I am sick of watching Chevy powered Commodores and Ford US powered Falcons whizzing around. Neither car bare any resemblance to the stock road car, as compared with the Grp A vehicles that required a run of 5000 and then 500 homolgation specials.

It was a great site to see V8 Commodores, V8 Mustangs, V12 Jags, 4 cyl BMW M3s, V8 Rover SDIs and Godzilla Skylines slugging it out. As long as I live I will never forget the JPS BMW M3s of Jim Richards flogging all comers.

At the bare minimum, why cannot other manufacturers enter in the V8 Supercars?

Dunno, but I enjoy watching some of the car raching that SBS shows on speedweek. Trucks are fun to watch, as are things like the GTP category and the procar stuff. there is some decent racing out there.

V8 supercars and F1's have become boring recently IMO

I agree noddy, I used to love watching cars race that you could actually buy from the dealer. That was when the manufacturer rivalry was real :!:

Unfortunately, it got SO real that Holden and Ford got the ****s when Nissan were unbeatable. Rather then building a better car, they simply changed the rules and banned all other makes!

One of the worst moments in Australian sport was when Jim Richards was boo-ed on the winners podium at Bathurst by the Holden and Ford fans. A very dark day in Australian motorsport and one which should not be forgotten!

Appendix J for all the "old bangers" is the go.Last time I went to Wanneroo for the touring cars,( the sierras and BMws were still racing) I got more of a buzz watching the EH holdens, minis, mustangs, galaxies, chevy impalas battling it out with their drum brakes and rag tyres in the histric Apendix J class.
HQ holden racing is also a top class to watch live, they arent fast, dont handle, and after a few laps dont stop,BUT every one on the track is in the same boat

I agree with you noddy, i love my v8's but you need variety. I loved the good old days, i remember going to bathurst in the 80's and watching the Jags kill everyone, and godzilla. Now those were the days. Unfortunatley for the super tourers, there are to many one eyed holden and ford supporter in Oz to appreciate the good racing offered by the 2lt racers. Matt

Group C is the go.

Thats the era of real factory muscle cars like the A9X and the GTHO.

No 500 only, it had to be a factory model or option.

Brocky winning by 6 laps in 1979 setting the lap record on the last lap of the race, is it any wonder why he is a "Hero" or a "Legend"

Bring on the same format as they use in the British / European Touring Cars.

Still remember the mighty days of the 90's Sierra's / Alfa's / Calibra's

Yep I agree. Nothing better than watching cars you could (theoretically - if you were rich) actually buy - racing.

The procar meets are great - love that Bowe Mustang. The Diablo is over-rated for me, even if it keeps winning

The ute racing series is great fun too. New owner this year should be even better.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Things could get good here in OZ, if Linfox, the new owner of Phillip Island get their way, we could see the DTM Touring cars here within a few years. Matt
