Do you speed thru roadworks????

Do you obey ported speed signs in roadworks????
We were having trouble today with speeding drivers causing a couple of near miss accidents.
The boss got the local police to come out with their laser radar gun. They said they would hang around for a hour, but did such a good trade they stayed for at least 3 hours until their batteries went flat.
1 woman is going to contest her ticket, she overtook 2 roadtrains in the jobsite, doing 120kmh,thats double the 60ks you are allowed to do as she claims there were no signs up.Dont like her chances,as we are doing the job for main roads we have to log the signs in a journal, they are all checked and noted every hour
Until you have actually worked on a road you dont appreciate what a danger speeding vehicles present.Fortunately Im driving a 6 wheel tipper at the moment,I only have to look out for the big boys in their road trains, which 99.9% of do the rite thing and come thru nice and slow.

Yeah, i generally slow down Landy, after all its for the safety of the workers, it ****es me of just as much seeing dickheads scream through school zones.

I was waiting at some lights at some road works between orange and bathurst one day, i was 5 or so cars from the front, and the que was around 30 on cars long. When the light went green we all start to pull away when this **** wit came screaming up the wrong side of the road, from the back of the que and joined 3 from the front, just cut off the 4th car to get in, then dissapeared like an idiot after we passed the road works. Some people are just so inconsiderate. Matt

You want to try doing the "Stop/Go" job Its a real eye opener. You have 3 or 4 cars stop then a WUCKFIT comes up at 100ks plus,no matter how good they think they and their car are the maths and physics they didnt learn at school stop their vehicle from stopping in time and they end up skidding to a halt on the wrong side of the road You get to give them a really good bolliking, unfortunately diplomatically and tell them that you will be passing their rego no onto the local constabulary.
It is a really dangerous job,the up side is there are many good motorists out there, and its quite common to be given lollies(usually by oldies) and ice cold cans of coke from truckies and the occasional caravanner.

I do. And I reckon the cops would have a field day on the M4 at Wallgrove Road. The limit is 80km/h there and I'm regularly passed by blokes whipping along at well above the limit.

For the past 6 months or more, the roadworks at Wentworth Falls and Leura have had a limit of 40km/h. I slow down to 40 and get blokes up my clacker trying to push my speed up.

I know road workers have been killed in the past by speeding cars and that should never happen.

I work on the railways as a signaller and we have strict safety procedures for work on track (or nearby). If I screw up, I could endanger work crews. So I also obey the limit at road worksites (nowhere else....... OK, also at school zones).

But I really get annoyed with 40km/h signs when there is no roadwork 'cos they've knocked off for the Easter or Xmas holidays.

I dont envy you. I try an keep as close to the speed limit as i can. What annoys me is that when you do the speed limit, people ride right up youre arse like you are doing something wrong. Matt

Hi Ron
The rules are very strict in relation to the speed signs. The roadworks/reduce speed signs can be left up all the time.Speed restrictions can only be left in place if there is a ligitimate reason.Quite often its not apparent,ie dust,no lanes marked, gravel sections, excavations etc on the shoulder, there are many reasons that they are up with no apparent activity.

And I thought I was becoming an old fart.

I come down to the designated speed limits as well for the reasons you have all stated, it annoys me no end when the halfwits tailgate to get me to exceed the limit.

They should enforce the tail gating thing, i used to watch the motorway patrol show when it was on, its in NZ, when the traffic is to thick to use the radar gun accurately they drive along the freeway and slap people with $150NZ fines for tailgating. Matt

I agree, sometimes I wish I was driving something I didn't care about and was able to slam on the brakes for something that may have crossed the road............ although I did see a copper pull up two in one go the other day for tailgating

Another good reason not to speed thru roadworks is you dont know if the machine operators on the job have seen you,we have a loader driver who has a real bad habit of backing out into traffic,WITHOUT LOOKING,its a big loader, you probably wouldnt even win a contact in a truck, unless it was a fully laden long nose roadtrain. And another who has tipped the rubber tyred roller over,TWICE
