Actually speaking of the ACE, that neighbour of ours has ACE in his disco. Until recently he had the latest model falcon, (council car and he retired at xmas so had to give it back) Which he loved to drive, and even went as far as to say the disco handled nearly as well as that :!: I would consider this to be quite a statement, this guy is an engineer, so he's no dummy.
I would offer my disco Kerry, but mine's a lot older than the model you're after, and a V8.
If the posts in this thread do nothing to convince you about the benefits of the disco over the L/C then you've probably already made up your mind.
Whatever you buy, good luck and I hope to see you on the road somewhere.

I got the PM but I thought replying at nearly midnight was a bit rude.
have you been staying up in anticipation Marcos waking up?
To add to the toyo woes, the 5spd box is the same box that they first brought out in the 80's. It has not grown to match the weight growth of landcruisers and is now prone to breaking, especialy 5th gear, when towing. Also, toyota officially, does not reccommend fitting a locking diff on the IFS models, as the rear wheel studs are not strong enough and will shear off. They went form six studs, down to five in a smaller pattern.

Seeing as I own a 100 Series (for the next week anyway) I thought I would put my 2c worth.
No doubt about it, they tow very well, when set up properly, with polyairs, springs etc. I towed an 80 Series on a car trailer behind mine down the F3 and out to penrith and hardley knew it was there.
The interior is great, execpt for a little less legroom than i'd like but i'm 6'2". The factory stereo kicks ass in the GXL, it's very good.
Ok thats the good points, now for the dislikes.
Handles like a boat, they really wallow around corners.
No where near as capable off road as i'd expected/hoped. Mine is RFS with twin lockers and I couldn't follow a mate of mine in an unlocked GQ Patrol, it's just the wrong wheelbase.
Cruise Control is playing up and it's $1500 to fix it!!!!!!
Turning circle of the queen mary, they are a nightmare in shopping centres, this is the main reason we have traded it in, as it's my wifes car and she has just got sick of trying to park it.
They are so wide you really need to be careful what tracks you go on as they will NOT fit everywhere. This could be a HUGE PITA with a trailer if you need to try and turn around in the middle of nowhere.
Fuel Economy, mine is petrol so I won't metion the fact it gets 500-600km from 135L, but I was on a trip to Fraser Island and there was a 100 GXL Factory Turbo Diesel, a TD5 Disco, and a DI-D Pajero, for the same amount of driving in 2 weeks, the 100 Series used 500L more diesel than the Disco and 600L more than the Pajero. The owner promptly sold the cruiser on his return home and bought a Pajero (Grrr).
Having said all that, the cruiser is big and comfy on long trips but it is not all it's cracked up to be, I will not buy another one, and Toyota have a dismal record for after sales service, almost as bad as Holden, at least where I live. Anyone else remember the big end bearing problems of the 80 series that Toyota did nothing about until it had charged a huge number of customers $15k for rebuilds?
It has no affect on me which vehicle you buy, I'll go 4WDing with anyone, but I just thought you should know some facts from the real world.
Cheers,
Ash

Hey guys thanks for the replies Kerry went to bed early so didn't get to read these so i've rung her at work so as she can look at them. I'm editing this as i have just read Ashleys reply thanks Ash very helpfull i have noticed driving my mates cruiser handling is not good, a boat, 8O more like a floundering yaght in heavy seas.
Thanks rmp very good and informative response i would not get the IFS cruiser and have given Kerry all the info i gathered about this model and yes not a strong part of Tojos fleet must have had a brain spasm when designing that one.
Kerry was looking at Discos again last night in 4x4 trader so still possible it could be a Disco, the big test is to get one for a test to tow the camper my mates Tojo did impress when towing it, it did it pretty effortlessly i must say, it has had a turbo fitted just 1500ks ago so could well of helped.
I also must say that Tims (Noddy) Defender impressed us when towing Jasons Rangie at Aces BBQ so i know the TD5 is a very capable in the towing department, if we do go for the Disco my only minus is the fact we will have to get the centre diff lock installed (as we would go Disco SII) and chip it if we want to bring it up to scatch in the off road and towing department.
If we get to test the Disco towing the camper and it does it as well as the cruiser then we or should i say Kerry might well change her mind cause i know Kerry and Nessie do like the Disco she was very impressed with Matts (Ace) Disco.
Thanks again guys we will see,
Barry.

Barry, KLR AUto do sell Landrovers and might have a TD5 available for a test drive, otherwise if you do decide to go with a disco and are willing to wait for the right one, they can find it and make sure its a good one.
Give them a call 4721 3675, ask for Brad or Matt.

Apparently in the late 2001 early 02 to 04 it was removed alltogether so it has to be replaced then the switch or lever can be put in, i was quoted a price but can't remember it.

Aaahh thats it, thanks we were looking at the 01/02 SerII so this will help.
I will have to ring the mob that chip the TD5 and get a price too.
