Post Issues - What would you do?

I ordered some car parts from a small supplier in Europe that were being sent through the Austrian Post system and they were paid for via Paypal.

They have not turned up so I contacted the seller on Friday. He said they were delivered on 2 September and signed for by a T. Saini. I have asked for Tracking Information twice but none has been provided. I do know, that despite being told what the address was and it also being in the Paypal documentation they got the house number wrong - they listed it as 212 rather than 21 - there is no 212.

So I went to the post office today just in case it was there but of course it was not there. i then rang Australia Post to see what my options were - basically without the tracking information - nothing. Other than tracking information there is nothing else attached to the bar code - things like who the parcel is addressed to is not attached so you cannot search the tracking database for other information like name and address.

We discussed likely scenarios - he said then name on the receipt was most likely the driver (Saini is Indian and my driver is Indian) and that their driver procedures are to return misaddressed items to the mail centre. I said what about them using a bit of common sense to sort the issue - like realising 212 is really 21 as the same driver does the area each day (he actually delievered a parcel to me on the day) - but no return to sender.

So the item is now most likely being returned to sender via sea mail but without the tracking information no one knows. The Aust Post did a search of the dead letter database but there is nothing there.

So what would you do?? The value with shipping was $1100.

I am predisposed to give the seller another chance to supply the tracking information but then if no luck just put in a claim via Paypal.

Interestingly I received a message from a French Aussie living ion France who picked the supplier staright away and said he has the same issue - getting addresses stuffed up all the time.

So what would you do - a Paypal claim and hope the best or something else?

    Thanks

Do as you've already said, put your foot down on the sellers head until he gives you the tracking number and if he doesn't then time for a paypal claim.

lodge the paypal claim now-item hasnt arrived and seller sent to wrong address, you can cancel the claim if the seller does the right thing and sends a replacement. I wouldnt be waiting for the item to return to place of origin so it can be resent.

Thanks for all the comments - generally reinforces my thoughts.

I finally obtained the Austrian tracking number and spoke to Australia Post this morning and it is as I assumed.

As the parcel was addressed to number 212 rather than 21 the driver returned the parcel on 2 Sept to the mail exchange as being undeliverable as address unknown. Aust Post do not even do a basic "common sense" check to see if the unknown address can easily be resolved which it would have in my case.

So Aust Post marked the package as return to sender and was despatched back via Sea Mail on 4 Sep to arrive back to the sender in a couple of months with Aust Post paying the shipping costs . They use the same Austrian Tracking number but the Australia Post Online Tracking system does not recognise the format but yet if you speak to someone in Aust Post they can track the parcel. A few inefficiencies there.

I have advised the seller and asked for either a Paypal refund or to send another item. I will give them to the end of this week and if not to my satisfaction will lodge a Paypal claim as I have until the end of this month to do so.

All these problems just because an extra 2 was added to the House address. The problem is that this seller is the only supplier of these parts in the world (hi-speed portal hub gears)- nice to have but not essential but I would like them if I can get them.

    Thanks

You were damn lucky to get someone in Aust. Post to do anything. Officially you are not the customer. Any search has to be instigated by the sender, who often could not care less. They have their money and have sent the parcel.

With the original package on its way back to Austria the seller has despatched a new package to me - I have the tracking number and know it is on its way to me.

    Thanks for all the input.

    Cheers
