I was actually thinking of the country around Alice, as I've just been out there, but there are plenty of other places where the same has happened.
I'm in favour of forestry and timber as a renewable resource, but unfortunately there's too much take and not enough planting, for various reasons. Turning forested land into bare paddocks is not smart thinking.
With the climate getting hotter we're going to reap the results of deforestration in loss of grazing land, more dust storms, farms becoming more marginal, towns becoming less viable etc. I see there is talk of much of the wine industry moving to Tasmania as the mainland becomes less suitable for it, for example.
I think we need to get a lot smarter and more forward-thinking if we are to survive long term on one of the world's direst landmasses.

significant amounts of land need to cleared for vineyards too.....I'm not sure Taswegians would be too happy with that.
then there's the infrastructure .....roads.....storage.....transport
if only 5-10% of Australia's wine industry moved down there it would scare the **** out of the locals.
I don't think many people realise the immensity of it.

I am very optimistic with the new irrigation areas that made land that was not productive before to a great potential now.
Things start looking good since the last government start pushing for irrigation.
Tasmania will able to produce more wine but only the types that are good for its climate conditions and soil. The Tasmania Pinot is one of the best in the world.
