Why the steel claws?
The topic came up in another thread. So here it is.
One of todays jobs was fitting stainless steel gloves to a stuffed grizzly bear:
Front paws:
Rear paws:
Apologies for the picture quality. I forgot to bring the real camera.
These gloves were difficult both to design and then fabricate.
First I had the idea of how I wanted them to look. But there were safety concerns that meant they had to be quite rounded and smooth. Solidworks also simply couldn't do the sheet-metal patterns which you can do yourself by hand. So each glove ended up being twice as many sheet-metal pieces as it could have been.
Then the sheetmetal guys who laser cut and fabricated bent them in a slightly different way which made them very difficult to shape together into the final result. But we got there.
I also had to include a safety edge on the front paws. They are right at eye level.
This is what the bear had back when he wasn't a stuffed pub ornament:

May as well have had a set of boxing gloves. Did it still have the real claws or were they souvenired by patrons? On a different base with claws. Anyone taken it back to the pet shop to complain that its dead and nailed to its perch?
Gee Dougal,
thats almost too much to bear!
I reckon now that bear is stuffed...
he is also probably a bit grizzly and if its that type of bar may even become a bi-polar bear??
I was thinking about making some cheap comment about the gloves idea but wasnt sure I'd be able to claw my way back from it..
Thanks for sharing. (good work by the way!)

I don't know how old this one is, but I suspect very. No claws or anything left apart from the hide on a plaster type sculpture. He needs a nose job next.
It sure puts them into perspective when they're well over 2m tall standing. I never, ever want to come across an angry one in the wild.![]()
