And it has been interesting reading what people write in this and compare what those same people write when they get a chance to hate on cyclists.

The big difference here is when I get caught I expect to be booked and usually are. As I have said before, many a time I have seen cyclists break the law in front of police and they do nothing.

Just go for a drive along beach Rd in Melb on any Sat or Sunday and you will see it.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Just out of curiosity, how many times have you been caught/booked and for what?

And motorists get away with plenty of things right under the noses of the police. There is a moan about it in the "what chance have they got thread" to start with.

Well, the NT government have proved open speed limits work.
Northern Territory Government set to extend open speed zone in wake of review - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Maybe they should expand the trials to the other big states such as WA and Qld.

The second last subheading in that article is:

    Open zones 'give back responsibility'

So forget ever seeing trials like this in any of the eastern states. Personal responsibility died years ago, which is why there is a law for everything now.

Yes here too in SA....we hand out personal prescriptions to newborn babies, for a cotton wool blanket to wrap them up for life, legislation for the lowest common denominator.
Eg...our trains have speed restrictions at some level crossings and pedestrian crossings. Just in case some dimwit can't see boom gates...flashing lights and a 200tonne train!!

It died around the time governments were running out of money, so they had to create a new revenue stream.

I used to drive real fast and weave in and out of lanes, the usual crap. It was a race to get everywhere. Only ever got caught once way back, never had an accident and I do up near 100k a year every year. Then I went overseas and drove around some different countries, I did quite a few kilometres. It didn't take me long to realise that Australian drivers like me were dickheads. Now I do the speed limit and try to be as courteous as possible, call me a reformed dickhead (RD). I've been an RD for over 10 years now. Our speed limits are low because we deserve it. Thank you to the drivers in those other countries for showing me how to behave....and lucky I never drove in Russia.

'Speed' doesn't kill, bad drivers do.
I have spoken to a few cops who said that speed is almost never a factor in accidents and then only extreme speeds.
The cameras, etc are all about revenue raising. Qld alone raised over $150 million last year from speed cameras, and the vast majority of that was for doing only a few k's over the limit.

Personally, I will never pay another speeding fine if I can help it. I've been 'done' four times in last couple of years for only a few k's over the limit.

Took every one to court... won two, lost two (but they were because I screwed up with corrupt judges... should have followed procedure better and likely would have won those as well).

The simple answer is: ALL speed measuring devices (cameras, guns) are ILLEGAL in Commonwealth Law (Commonwealth law prevails over state law when there is a controversy between the two).
This is because NONE of these devices have Pattern Approval as required under Section 10 of the National Measurements Act 1960.

If you get a fine, go to court. At court give the cops a 'Notice of Intention to Dispute' based on section 10. If you do it right, the cops will simply drop the case so as to avoid a precedent.

Drove the D2 up the centre to Darwin in 2004 and certainly tested the top speed at the time. Interestingly there was three things that made me pull my head in.

    1. Following (some distance behind) a Nissan Patrol sitting on 150 when the Patrol let out a big cloud of smoke and came to a grinding halt. He had blown the motor.

    2. Coming across some camels wandering across the road when you are flat out. Good test of the ABS brakes.

    3. Realising that even a Td5 can suck up the fuel quickly and maybe you won't get to the next fuel stop.

I am sure if I had the EGT fitted at the time, I would have been in for a 4th shock as well (see point 1).

So having found my comfort zone, I found sitting on 130 felt about right. Pretty much the default speed in the North Of WA as well.

Open limits in the NT is nothing like the open autobahn's in Germany where 160 seemed appropriate and the roads have full barricading and the drivers keep out of the way.
