Does anyone ever obey the speed limit

I recall a German Traffic (?) Engineer coming out to Oz a few years ago. When pressed for some comments on our roads and highways, he declared that 'Your roads (design & quality) are the equal of any in Germany. - Your drivers are not...' :eek: :wasntme:

When we came back from down 'bush' this long week-end, it was frightening the number of tail-gating idiots and fools looking for a Darwin Awards entry we had to share the roads with. Especially Kojonup - Williams.... :)

Funny that you should mention your comfort-zone, as I found 80 to 85 mph (130 to 138km/h) to be the 'sweet spot' for my old Crown, when I was younger and did more country miles...

The only car-collision I've had occurred WAY below the speed limit, at 25 mph (40 km/h). Seat belts would have prevented the near-fatal injuries...

I've driven on the autobahns in Germany. Australian roads are nothing like them in design and quality - there is simply no comparison. ;)

He was definitely right about the drivers though. A large percentage of Australian drivers wouldn't last five minutes on an autobahn. :censored:

Of course it works both ways - a large proportion of the Autobahn drivers would come to grief pretty quickly driving on the local roads round here - they have little experience with corrugations, broken edged bitumen, driving in clouds of dust, and fast moving erratic marsupials.

I've driven on most of the German autobahns and I didn't think they were anything special compared to ours. Some were definately in need of repair. I thought the drivers were very good though. They were the standout difference.

There are places I think we should have a much higher speed limit but like you I'm sure, I see drivers who are unsafe at any speed so slower for all of us is safer. One twit today turning left so they swung on to the right lane on a 3 lanes each way road:eek:
I was in the left lane doing the speed limit when they came back across two lanes at almost a crawl speed :censored:

Hate to think what would could have happened if someone was speeding in centre or left lane.

Just think of all the extra tax we do not have to pay due to the nice people who choose to pay the voluntary taxes for us and smile smugly as they go past:angel:

I guess it depends on the road. The South Eastern Freeway from Crafers to Murray Bridge in SA is a great road. I am sure the design speed would be 130kph+. 110 is certainly "slow" on that road.

In a D4 or RR a dirt track is 130 [emoji41]

A while back, I came home from Perth to Kalgoorlie via the Hyden - Norseman Road. Had to turn south at Southern Cross because the Great Eastern Hwy was blocked where a road train of cyanide had rolled over.

At one point while travelling along the dirt road somewhere west of Norseman, I had been cruising along quite happily when I entered a long sweeping bend a little too quickly and found myself going into a 4 wheel drift (which the D4 quickly corrected by itself :D). Looked down at the speedo and saw that I was sitting on just over 130 - very easy to do without realizing it in these cars. :eek:

Yep - certainly is a nice bit of road and easily capable of 130 km/h plus. Though I don't think it would be as pleasant at 200 km/h or so in a standard dunnydoor or similar. :D
