Question Change the car, what to do?

The 406 Peugeot coupé it is a beautiful car but it is getting harder and harder for me an my wife to get in and out of it. It is low and the doors are heavy and big. So we will sell it.
The problem it is what to get with a shoe string budget of $10000.
Rule N1 I do not whant electronics on it and perhaps the only compromise are electric windows.
Rule N2,it have to be high enough for the seats be at bumb level so we can drag ourselves in an out ( our chassis (AKA spine) is well pass the due date
One of the best vehicles that we ever have was the RR Hiline 1988 manual with the 3.5 V8 engine on it.It was very comfortable and capable offroad vehicle with very good cargo space behind the rear seat.
The other was the Disco Tdi manual which was good but the cargo space behind the rear seat is far to small.
Our last Defender, a Tdi300 was the best in cargo capacity good for my comfort but not for the wife.

What I am thinking is in trying to have the best points of the above vehicles in one by purchasing a RR 1988 to 1992 and fit on it a Tdi300 engine and manual box.
It is that a good approach? it can be done with $ 10.000 or less?

Note: The disco Td5 it is not even in the top 100 cars on my list

Why not the D2? Too much electronics? I saw a Td5 manual a couple of weeks back that the bloke bought for $3,500.

I was going to suggest a Subaru Forester but it might have too much electronics for your rules. We have one for much the same reason as you - easy to get in and out of. We are on our third Forester.

Any reason you don't want an auto? I reckon they are more reliable than manuals.

Having a RRC converted to a 300Tdi manual won't be cheap. The seats on an old RRC may well be past their use by date.

Thanks Ron for your inputs, auto box can be an option, perhaps will be easy in my lower back by not pressing the clutch but then again, here in Tasmania we do not have the bumper to bumper traffic that you people have in the big cities.
The Subas are great car, the old ute was awesome but I am looking for something with 2 ton towing capacity and good under chassis clearance.

Ahh, your latter requirement does change things a bit.

Re the auto, you are right about traffic, I can't imagine going back to a manual for a daily driver.

Just open and close the door for her :P

Seriously, have a look at the thread not far down on finding a car for someone with back issues. Given your criteria you will be looking at something that is at least 25years old.... which means constant relentless upkeep no matter how reliable the vehicle is.

Anything modern is going to be full of electronics... I bet even a Defender is full of them.

Shane, we drive an average of 10000 km a year so there will be not much mechanical issues once a rebuilt engine is fitted.
Also, here in Tasmania it is possible to get vehicles with only 1/3 of the km in the clock of the vehicles in the main land.

Why do you want heaps of storage space now, seeing as your Pug was a coupe...?
A Barn-Find later model D1 would tick the boxes, I would imagine.

If you can put up with the Forester, I'd be inclined to go that way... Old & Good quality Jap is more reliable than old pommy...

Mazda have their Tribute, available in AWD as well as FWD. later models easier on fuel. Seating not too high either and easy for disabled. - Friend of mine with 'Polio legs' is on his second one.

But if you want to stick with Unusual and Orphan cars (like RR's ) look around for a Musso/SsangYong. The later ones came with a diesel, I think... "Nobody" wants them, and the In-Laws picked up a showroom-nick one for $15k some years ago. Seating is approx the same height as my Classic... Not as comfortable seating, but the electric seat and all other switches work perfectly.
And will continue to do so, forever...

The Musso/SsangYong IIRC is essentially a knock off MB built under licence in Korea with a Merc diesel engine. Very under rated machine =vg value for the money... occasional bits for service may be an issue on The Island...
