    Newbie dumb question

    Hi,

I currently have a 94 Disco. I want to sell it and buy a diesel. Can anyone please tell me what's the difference between the TDI and TD5 engines?

I am changing mostly for fuel economy and am looking at a 2001 TD5 with 49,000 km's on the clock. As my old one has nearly 200k on her and is going well I'm assuming I'll get years out of the new diesel. Is there anything I should beware of when checking out the proposed new Disco?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Regards

    Martin

Technically there is all sorts of differences. the TD5 is a 2.5 litre bmw sourced, 5 cylinder turbodiesel engine.

the TDI is only a 4 cylinder and although advanced for the time, is relatively simple compated to the TD5.

I'm afraid I can't tell you much more than that other than the TD5 is more powerfull, smoother, quieter etc etc.

I love my TDI but there is alot to be said for the TD5, both are great cars and engines in there own right. I think if you have the $$$ buy the TD5 it easy to get more power from a TD5 if you want it.

I guess simple put TDI old tech & TD5 current tech

( all be it for only another month or so )

Hi Martin welcome to the forum, we have just done what you are about to and i have to say it is a great car as Phoenix has said a very powerfull quiet and smooth engine and very good economy we love our Disco. Our camper is very heavy and i was very impressed with the ease the Disco tows it, i can't say enough about it, you will not regret buying one.

Oh by the way there is no such thing as a dumb question, not asking is dumb.

Offroad there is very little difference .. onroad is where the TD5 is a class above .. especially uphills  Fuel economy is pretty much the same .. although I would give the Tdi a slight advantage here.
