Insurance advice - old buildings (pre 1890)

I called AAMI today after getting a building insurance renewal during the week which went up by approximately 35% to ask why the price rise?

They went through all the building details advising they have a new system and some details are now missing as the new system has more details than the old. At the point of asking when my building was built, they said 1890, and I advised no it was 1885, they said they no longer insure anything earlier than 1890 and they were happy to still renew the policy but couldn't guarantee they would honour it in a claim if they found it was built earlier. I was very unhappy and advised them to cancel the policy as it was pointless given the building has a huge 1885 stone on the front.

There is heaps of old buildings about, any advice on who to go to to get reasonable building insurance for a 1880's stone building in country South Australia?

Is it a residence or commercial?
If residential, give APIA a call, (You don' have to be a pensioner to insure with them) my place was built in 1910 and all they wanted was pics to make sure it wasn't falling down.

Had a claim about 5 years ago when the wind blew down one of my sheds and they were real easy to deal with.

John, as your place is an old church and insurance policies don't cover the hand of God, you might have to ask for Divine protection.

I think AAMI have lost the plot , I have been with them for years .
My renewal came this year with a 35% increase i rang to be told this is the way it is insurance is expencive to fine i say .
On the net do a quote with YOUI and my insurance is now less than half what AAMI wanted .

We're with NRMA and have been for some years. When I was researching alternatives at renewal time a couple of years ago I found it difficult to find anyone whose web site would accept that a house could be built of stone, let alone in 1860.

Not house insurance, but AAMI lost any chance of insuring my 2a when their computer said that Landrover did not make any vehicles that early!
