The transit also has a bypass centrifuge filter - similar to the TD5. On the LR engines this was deleted (presumably to save costs).
Lower rated power would mean less soot getting into the oil. However the real reason may be torque profiles or fuel consumption.
I wonder if the defender got a smaller turbo to work with the anti stall.
Other than that. It appears LR don't want more than 90kw in the defender platform.

Are the figures quoted from the manufacture or independent dyno tests?
Are the engines in the same configuration when tested?
Under what standard are they tested?
Where is the out put measured?
Is the out put measured at the crank or the wheels?
I think that numbers would sell, but also the defender and transit have a different demographic. The Transit was originally designed to load sheets of 8' x 4', tools and get along the roads at 70mph with sports car handling.
The defer was designed to go up 1:3 hills, of wet grass with sheep in the back at night. Two very different design profiles.
The tradie knows that the Transit has a good reputation and if the new model comes out but is less power (Kw / Nm) than two years ago, well, he is not going to be too thrilled about that.
The farmer, Land Rover tragic, knows that they have never had the best reputation for getting along the highway and so dismisses the change of engine asn not much, but carrys on on and moans that there are too many electrics to go to teh bush and cant hose the interior out.
There is probably through life costs as well. Defers probably stay on the road longer where as transits get turned in sooner and because they are a tradies vehicle, the purchases of 2nd and 3rd hand are expecting them to have been thrashed a bit and so not expecting the engine to be as powerful as it was.
My money would be where the measurements are taken, crank shaft or at the wheels.
The R380 box was called so as it was designed to play with 380nm.Altough another gear was added,was the ford powered Deefer up to any more????
Dropping the sailsbury diff for a rover type diff would have one wondering about the driveline strength.

And here I was thinking the Transit was to do bank getaways, and the Defender for us James Bond types to drive to the Casino. :D
Having grown up with V8s, & owned lots of 'em, for sure, I love a bit of "grunt".....and I'd love more "grunt" in Gracie, our 90,....a 350hp & 550nm petrol V8, or say a 3L 150KW 600nm diesel would do me just fine,.....but it ain't gonna happen.
We drove a 180KW Disco 4 recently, & jeez, wouldn't I like that engine in Gracie!
However, road "rules" these days have made it pretty well impossible to enjoy a powerful fast car as I did in the 70s & 80s. So, with speed limits etc these days, ya just can't go "fast",.....& Gracie sits on 100/110 at around 2100rpm just as well as our C63 did.
So, 90KW?, well it's only really noticeable getting away from the lights, and I suppose overtaking a B Double does require a bit of planning, but to be honest, I'm really liking having to deal with 90KW, changing gears, watching my braking etc, & all the other things that are "different" in a Defender.
I'm not really bothered by 90KW, but if a bigger, more powerful engine option had been available, then I would have optioned it.
