A tragic waste of life. Young English tourist probably out here on a working holiday and an adventure of a life time. Her parents back in the UK are grieving and knowing that they'll never see their daughter again. There are no winners. Sitting in the drivers seat of a 4WD doesn't necessarily mean you know how to drive a 4WD. You can't put an old head on young shoulders and especially in hindsight.

That is only the basic barn door model .

The crashed car looks like a GXL which is a 7 seater.

Irrespective of this - too many for a trip like that.

    Cheers

The news report says All those injured were in one of several four-wheel drives following each other on a guided tour when the incident occurred.
so lets' not jump to conclusions about the ability of the drivers, loading of vehicles etc.
Shouldn't tour operator should have ensured all vehicles in the tour were capable and safe before venturing out?

They have tag a long tours up there now, the lead car with the group leader (employed person) driving with 2 or 3 other cars following - the drivers of these are usually tourists also and they can swap around during the trip. The backpackers we spoke to a few weeks ago said they had to watch about a 20minute video and that was it. They couldn't drop tyre pressure etc. They don't have anything on the roof anymore - against the law. But they do pack them in.

The hightide road from Hook Point to just south of Dilli Village has always been a very poor road, I doubt that it gets much, if any maintenance. This could have contributed to the accident. I chose not to travel this road because of its condition but if you have to get off the island and the tide is too high to get round the bottom its on the only option.

Looking at the picture, it's a long stretch to say it is a problem with the vehicle (unless a mechanical breakage). With the quality of the road it could have easily been a falcon or commodore. Looks like it will probably be down to speed and driver mishap.
