I spent many hours argueing with scientist during my time on NORMAC and seen footage of fishing practices that make you look away, I have a fair idea of what will be involved.


Even tho I never always agreed with their view Australia has a lot of very good marine scientist who could match it with the best in the world.


Hopefully with shows like the one we are talking of people in this great country will realise there is no need for the blanketing marine park closures that are trying to be introduced here.... But that's another topic..

If you go to Morgans at Scarborough most of their so called fresh seafood is labelled as overseas product and is not fresh as such but freshly defrosted. And that is right on Moreton Bay. Bit of a worry.

Dont worry,the amount of dead bi catch the aussies were chucking out was shown.At least it was balanced by the reduction of trawlers operating in the industry and trawling at nite to reduce this bi catch.

OK I will have to watch it... Its funny because we ( the industry ) spent a lot of $$$ building a water tank in the middle of where the nets are emptied so the fish and prawns could remain in water to keep the survival rate up. Not sure what system the Comac Endeavour has , but we used to have a shoot on the back as well as the end of the sorting conveyors, this way any fish on the top was returned straight back to the water.

The worst bit about the Aussies was the SA bloke was selling the you bute aussie prawns as prawns.

The number of boats in a fishery is not so important as the total allowable catch in the fishery, so the amount of bycatch for a given total allowable catch will generally remain the same irrespective if it is taken by 50 boats or 150 boats.

It was interesting that the presenter essentially compared our wild catch fisheries with Thailand farmed fisheries and the ramifications on the environment in providing food for the prawns but no where did he talk about our farm prawn industry and its impact on the environment.

Many of the Aussie prawns you will buy in shops and supermarkets will be aussie farmed prawns.

True on fisheries managed under TAC or Quota, but to my knowledge there is no prawn fisheries in Australia managed under TAC , but I could be wrong.


Most prawn fisheries I know of are managed under time quota, not a TAC ,so the amount of boats is very relevant to the total by catch of the fishery, we dealt with this issue when trying to get MSC for the NPF.


I think this is why he has compared the wild caught Australian fisheries to the farm Thailand fishery. From my understanding of prawn farming, its the search or fishing for the food source for the farms is the biggest issue, and its this type of fishing practice that has bought the farming into question.in other words the fish meal they feed the farmed prawns with.
