    Whats the catch????

Anybody watch the show on SBS last nite?????
Matt Evans hosted a brilliant show on the sustainability of prawn fishing.
    Footage from Thialand was shocking.
Its a must watch if you have catch up TV etc.
The Aussie prawn industry gets a good thumbs up.
Thai prawn imports should be baneed now!!!!!
Will be interesting to see where he goes with this show in future episodes as he is getting stuck into all fisheries.
    WELL DONE!!!!!!

We taped it and are watching it as I type.

I'd like to hear Ean Austral's view on the programme - I noticed the MSC prawns are from Austral.

I will be interested in Eans comments.
Way back I told him there is an absoute lack of aussie product available and I think there will be a big bunch of us interested in wild catch prawns. It grew into Eans Xmas prawn orders, all of wich Ean did just to get aussie prawns out there to those that want them.

    Gday All,

I only caught the last part and only a short amount of that. I seen when he went out to the Comac Endeavour ( the Austral fisheries prawn trawler ).

    Couple of comments,
MSC is for the whole NPF ( northern prawn fishery ) not just Austral Fisheries, but anyone who operates in the fishery can display the MSC logo. Its also review every 1-2 years depending on how the fishery is graded. I was 1 of 5 people involved in getting the fishery into MSC certification because I was on the advisory board and it took several years to achieve, but as was said, its the first ( and I still think the only tropical bottom trawl fishery to achieve MSC cert. in the WORLD ) but the cost to the operators of the fishery was millions, and from memory we received bugger all government $$. I still think it was the best thing as an industry we did, and am proud to have been apart of it.

Austral fisheries is not me, they got the name before I could, they have or did have a fish trawler called "Austral Leader " that operated catching toothfish in the heard island fishery way south of Australia. Our boat was called Austral .

I will watch the program in full before I comment much more.

Am really glad to see some good attention being bought to the industry for a change.

    Cheers Ean

Thanks for the link Andrew, a good subject everybody should consider.
It's not just seafood though, all produce and foods are in the same boat (pun not intended). In this household we're passionate about buying Australian products in general and food in particular. It can be very hard at times, to even find locally produced food.
We find that labeling can be (deliberately?) ambiguous or misleading, local products hard to find and at a price premium of 50-100%.
We are at the stage of life when we can afford to be selective, but we have struggled as many families still do, they have to buy on price.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

The Northern Territory actually has those laws labelling for both raw and cooked seafood, Rob Fish and the NT seafood council did a great job getting that law passed.

    Cheers Ean

Love the push for labeling of cooked product.
If you buy fresh fish product its mandatory to label where it comes from.Once you sell it cooked you dont need to divulge where the crud came from.

Ridiculous isn't it. I have to admit I'd never considered the origin of take away or restaurant food. I will now.
