    Bedding in a new desiel

As per my previous post I have a new addition to the fleet: A KIA PREGIO

It's a 2.7lt Desiel, and apart from following the manuals instructions I wanted to hear thoughts on bedding in proceedures for new Desiels.

a little effort now might save thousands in a few years

I have always been told, when bedding in any engine, never to rev the engine to hard for the first few thousand k's, and for the first 1000km to vary the speed when traveling along the highway, ie dont just sit on 110 for ages on a freeway at the same revs, slow down and speed up and vary it every now and then.

Then others have said you dont need to run in modern engines and its already practically done for you. Matt

even modern engines need to be run in. they are just not as critical as the good old days due to current day manufacturing technology.

its helps to bed the piston rings by slowing from 80kph to 60kph and then pushing it in a high gear back up to 80kph.
not all day....just a few times this builds up pressure behind the rings and beds them in to the cylinders.

the main thing with running in a new engine is dont over rev it.
    dont labor the engine.

this doesnt mean drive it like an old granny either.
just dont thrash the bejesus out of it just yet.

on the first oil change(around 1500kms) make sure the filter is also changed.

around town all you will wear in is the brakes.

I have been told to use a cheaper thinner oil in the first 1000-1500km to help bed the rings in, dont know if this is correct. Matt

they come with the correct grade from factory for running in when they are new.

if you rebuild your own engine there is a running in oil available, good to run for the first 1000 - 1500kms then change oil (AND filter) to correct grade for that particular engine.

Thanks DZ, however did you get so wise?

I think the main thing is Jason, dont rev the crap out of the engine, take it easy and dont work it to hard just yet. Matt

Get the thing up to operating temp then load it right up. It's so important to load the rings up straight away other wise you waste that precies cross hatching in the bore's. Find a long big hill and give it a good flogging up the hill for a good half hour. If you don't bed the ring's in correctly in the first 100km they never will be.
The manual only says what it say because if they manufactured the engine incorrectly, there's gonna be much less warrenty cost than if you've got it near redline.
There's plenty of other people on this site that do the same with great results. All the engines I've built from Isuzu's the Chev's have all been run in this way and have all performed higher than expected because of correct ring seal, it's that important.
