Bushie wasn't sitting on either side vehicle was empty (of passengers), batteries are on the left though and a pair of optima yellows would have to go close to 40kg.

Still it doesn't help explain it all.

Please clear something up for me, as far as I know GCM is gross combination mass which means with a trailer, and on my disco it is 6220 kg, thats a hell of a lot of weight. This is what QLD Transport have said is legal. Is this correct 8O
That sounds about right:

3500 kg for the trailer (Discos rate highly)

1920 tare + 800= 2720 kg GVM

Check your GVM on the rego papers.
My 4BD1 Rangie Rego Papers:

Tare 2320
GVM Blank
GCM Blank
AGG Weight Blank

Whats the ramifications of this if any?

1920 tare + 800= 2720 kg GVM quote

My Rangie's papers [NSW] say TARE 2060 GVM 2720

Does that mean the GMH engine is 160 kg more than the stock 3.5 litre

Rover motor? 8O

Struth! I think I better go on a diet..................

Lies, damned lies and statistics

That makes Maggots 4bd1 420kg heavier than LRH's original Range Rover V8. 8O

I hope that no one is policing this

The GVM of the vehicle is 3050 so I've got around 830kg to play with but the front axle loading is 1200kg. Our engineer said the rough rule of thumb would be that 30% of any extra load would be carried by the front axle with the remaining 70% on the rear.

This would give front axle of around 1390kg and rear around 1650 for the GVM of ~3050.

So while technically overloaded on the front axle probably not too bad. My normal camping trips up to now have been with the wife and 3 kids so we end up pretty well loaded.

Had the chance to weigh it again today, not a lot has changed with the exception of the aux fuel tank (full), roof rack and a few tools etc on board.

Front right 610kg
Front left 590kg
Rear right 570kg
Rear left 570kg

just for poops and giggle...

in the series and up to the end of the countys (oh OK and the perenties) the Tare of a landy included the normal operating fluids, spare, the supplied tool kit and 85Kg for the driver.

Not sure if they kept it up into the defenders. Havent had call to check.

Good topic this one, my guess it's one many don't want to know about.

One of the reasons I settled on a 130 was the 1500kg payload, and 3500 GVM. I know from a previous Rodeo it was always way over, and a Defender solved all the problems...and made few

I took mine down to the scales before Easter and $20 later I now know 1460kg steer, and 2040 on the drive.

Though maxed out that included every thing for a up coming desert trip with family in car ready to go. I'm also happy that 385kg of the load is water and fuel constantly reducing every mile done or nights camping.
It also helps with knowing by adding more stuff (like fire wood) is tipping the scales in the wrong way.

Defenders have(had) a thing called ECC kerb weight = unladen weight + full fuel tank + 75 Kg = 2086 Kg for a 130

For the 130 Front axle (max)........................1580 Kg
Rear axle (max).........................2200 Kg
GVM.........................................3500 Kg

(from 1996 300 Tdi workshop manual)
