    Fortitude Valley & Wests are back in the BRL competition!

    You little beauty! Go Valley's!. Next year, Valleys & Wests will be entered in a restructured Brisbane Rugby League first grade comp. The BRL competition approved by the southeast division by the QRL will comprise;

    Easts Juniors, Carina, Logan Brothers, Normanby, Valleys, West Brisbane Panthers, Redcliffe Juniors, Wynnum Redland City, Ipswich, and wait for it .....Drum roll.....the Sandgate Gators! [ Only they are no longer at Sandgate, bit of a disagreement, apparently] QRL chairman Peter Betros says the hope is to eventually get the standard of the new first grade comp to a standard much higher than Brisbane second division premier grade. Bob
    I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

    A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    Valleys Diehards. Est 1908. - It's good to be a Diehard!
    G'day Bob,Well this news has been awesome for him,its a bloody shame he didn't have his glasses when he came over today It seems he had a bit more to tell me about the 'diehard' days. His older brother Peter, was Mick Retchless best man at his wedding. It seems I got a little confused with my old man's playing history. He played under 18's and his coach was Norm Pope,he got the call up to A grade a couple of times but was not a regular first grader. His brother Peter played B grade as full back. But as Norm Pope was the A grade fullback he couldn't make the A grade team. It has been awesome reading all the articles on that site. Thank you very much for putting that up

    Yeah, pity so much has been lost. Valleys want all the old stories, for their records. If your Dad was interested, they would no doubt listen to his. Our family has one story I probably wont tell them. One game , just after the war, Dad made a break, down the sideline, no one in front. An opposition player came up fast behind him, so our Grandmother tripped the would be tackler up with her umbrella. So, the only member of our family sent off at Valleys home ground was our Grandmother. They were the days, Bob

    Don't mess with you grandma!!! Watching the old man's face light up when he was looking at the old team photos has been priceless He has been pointing out faces he remembers and telling me little stories about the blokes. He looked up some of the records and found his best forward in a semi final 1967 award. He told me playing against Ipswich in the 60's wasn't much fun,bloody brutal games he reckons. I am going to help him with getting his stories onto Valleys,and I am going to try and get his brother to try and contribute as well,Uncle Peter played from 65-73 so there has got to be some stories that should be told between the pair of them. Talking about your grandma's story I have a similar one,In 1987 me and dad came to Australia to visit his sick mum and during the visit we went down to watch my cousin play at St Pauls which is Logan Brothers V Waterford. As there were scouts from the Broncos also watching the game the standard of play was very high and the ground was very full and the pig pen was in full swing. The winger from Waterford was in the clear and heading for the tryline when one of the local supporters let his dog off the leash which very quickly caught the flying winger with a bite on his calf. Well, all hell broke loose....Players,supporters,ground officials were all throwing punches. It was the first all in brawl I had ever seen. The old man dragged me to a safe area away from the madness,and he said 'just like the good old days' with a smile.

    The old dog on the field play......Gotta love it. Something similar happened back in the 80's, when I was managing the Brighton under 16 side, my Dad was coach. Our side were young, most could have played u/15's, but we didn't have that age group team. Still, they were goers, we went down the south side, to a team which will remain nameless, not expected to win, & played the no2 side in the comp.. We beat them, the pig pen was full, a couple of well lubricated spectators on the sideline came on at the final whistle & started pushing the ref, one of our boys decked both of them, then the fight started. Well, we fought our way to the sheds, locked the boys in, and with officials & parents from both clubs keeping guard outside, kept the baying hordes at bay. Luckily the hoons were too full of soup to do much harm, and we managed to get everyone on the bus, and took off.

    I was a bit concerned about how the boys would take it, not the normal game day. Needn't have worried, they were cock a hoop. They'd beaten the 2nd side, AND won the fight! [ in their minds] We didn't win another game that year, but you wouldn't have known it. They gained the respect of the senior sides at the club after that , funny game, Rugby League. Bob
