$3mil for 10 mins of fireworks Melbournes New Year Eve

It seems Melbourne is spending $3mil on 10 mins of fireworks for New Year Eve celebrations.
I'm sure it will be a spectacular and be enjoyed by spectators. I don't know where the money is coming from, probably from CBD businesses or the Melbourne city council.
It seems money is always readily found for these sorts of things and to me 10 mil is a lot of money to burn and go up in smoke ( pardon the pun).
That money could do a lot for the Homeless people that wander and sleep in this city's streets. It's a pity that they can find 10 mil for extravagance but never can find that for the needy or other worthy causes.

People these days don't send Christmas cards, instead they donate the money that would normally be spent to a charity. May be peole could say we would rather not have this short extravagance and please use that money instead towards something worthwhile and lasting and give needy people a New year

I just dont 'get' fire works.
    Whats the point?

and I TOTALLY agree about needless waste like this.

I think the point is cities trying to out do other cities, like a dick swinging competition. MEL tries to do better than SYD and both try to beat AKL.

Paris tries to out do London etc....

It's the old bread and circus trick developed by the Romans
Or in this case, dole & fireworks

Businesses pay for it, hoping to drag people in to town, to spend money. I'm told an investment of 3 million can be doubled . [ I hit up our local council member, asked her to justify the expenditure in Brisbane] Something else that should not happen is "schoolies" Just a business initiative, to rip off kids , cynical stuff, when on face value, the government runs campaigns against binge drinking , & drugs, two of the biggest business winners during "schoolies" , Bob

Not a supporter of fireworks at all anymore.
Like many others I see it as wasteful and polluting for no real benefit.
Then you have the dicks in fire prone areas letting rockets go during fire season, very smart.

I was up in Brisbane just before the G20, the laser shows on many city building were really good and ran for weeks, so gave plenty of opportunity to see the artwork. Night markets and other events running as well.
In my opinion money better spent than 10 minutes of toxic materials being burnt and scattered through the sky.

As I often say at this time of year: Bah!.... Humbug!
