    Orion Spacecraft

NASA is preparing to launch the first heavy lift man rated space flight on their long road to get man to Mars. The spacecraft is designed to go beyond low Earth orbit and fly as far as the moon, which is the first time since the Apollo missions of the early seventies.

That is an epic journey, after Obama slashed NASA funding its great to see mankind can start to explore space again. But the cost of this when the USA is still in massive debt, massive unemployment and homelessness is questionable.

Agreed, there are major social problems in the good ol' U.S of A. But I think the Yanks are not too happy with the Russians ferrying their (the Yanks) astronauts up to the spacestation and they want to get one up on them...............shades of the old space race.

I have often wondered if the US and Russia would have achieved what they have with their space programs if they didn't have the German technology after WWII.?

The German rocket expert Dr Werner VonBraun was a great help to the Yanks with the early Redstone, Atlas and right up to the Saturn rockets used on the Apollo programs.

Actually the Russians had built a Lunar Lander, but when the Yanks beat them to the Moon, they shelved the program.

Correct, I strongly suspect the Russians rushed the construction of the launch vehicle without properly sorting out problems. The design was flawed and overly complicated.
