My son in law was knocked off his bike this morning. Riding in a bike lane and an Audi driver crossed the line into the bike lane. Bike totalled and he is very lucky not to have very serious injuries.
Even the Top Gear team had a go at trying to solve this problem last night on telly.
The conclusion;
"Give them an inch and they will give you a mile"![]()

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Thanks guys. Yes he was very lucky. He is trying to qualify for the Hawaii triathlon and so this has put his training schedule behind plus his very expensive bike is tin fruited.
He was doing over 40km/hr and the guy just crossed over into the bike lane and collected him.
Guess it is the classic 2 sides to every story.
Glad all is reasonably OK Nugge t, except for the bicycle obviously. Could have been worse for your SIL. I would love to ride a pushy for excercise but being on the roads everyday driving buses and seeing what goes on, I'm not game. I'm in my late 60's and want a few more years on this Earth yet.
So, I get my excercise by walking to and from work everyday.
I understand where you are coming from. I can see both sides of this one as I was a rider years ago and can also see the frustration with the antics of some on bikes.
I had been riding for years in Adelaide without ever having an incident but the drivers certainly seemed far more aggressive in Brisbane. Not long arriving here, I was forced into the gutter by a driver who thought I should only occupy the first 2 inches of road at which point my front wheel disappeared down a drain between the parallel bars on a storm drain with me going over the handle bars. No one even bothered to stop. The front wheel was buckled, one pedal busted, bars twisted etc and I had bark off all over.
Was still a couple of km's from work so I straightened the bars and hoped back on and pedalled with one leg, front wheel wobbling around looking like a drunk. The whole think must have looked pretty comical to everyone except me
I decided running might be safer!
Glad to hear he is ok Nugget
I ride 20kms a day to and from work and I am more mentally shattered then physically shattered as I am concentrating hard on not being hit by a car. But then yesterday I witness a lycra lunatic just ride straight through a red light.
Was not happy.
More common sense and patience is needed on both sides.
