Seems Australia has a long way to go. This bloke has ridden his bike all over the world and calls Australia the worst. Not a good look.

Hmmmm....
In Melbourne, motorists aren't the only problem. Some cyclists recognise this.

Rider education is a great idea. Once the course is done, they can be issued a license.
Then register their bikes and display registration numbers (just as other road users have to) then they can be identified and fined for transgressing the road rules that apply to all (just as other road users have to).
As a cyclist, that sounds very fair to me.
In Canberra we have the best network of cycle paths in the country if not the world, and STILL the Lycra brigade ride on the road ! Recently described by a cop as "Cockroaches of the road" No insurance, no rego etc etc. All that aside, I see them day in day out putting themselves in harms way on our busy streets, I don't want to see or hear of needless deaths or injuries, lifes too short as it is .....
I think a big factor here is that, quote "In Denmark, most people cycle to work or school" & I've got no beef with that. I quite often come across the same bloke riding on his way to work. We now even give each other a wave. However, in Oz, it would appear most cycle for ego, current trend etc.
Steve
I love how whenever the topic of cyclist v motorists comes up the typical response is that cyclists break the laws. If motorists didn't break laws we wouldn't need traffic cops, multanovas, red light cameras, road safety campaigns, demerits etc etc.
I have more near misses when driving than I ever do on my bike.
But hiding behind cyclists break the law is no excuse for the morons that feel the need to undertake vigilante action to educate us cyclists sometimes with tragic consequences.
People need to remember that cyclists are people with families too.
Ironically enough my most recent near miss was with a new Rangie with personal plates in Mt Pleasant who didn't want to wait 3 or 4 seconds for me to go past a traffic island and squeezed through.
Rant over.
Interesting you should say this as I was only thinking about this thread on a short while ago.
That particular thread contains boasts and admissions of law breaking, admissions of being ignorant of laws and plenty of anecdotes about other road users breaking the law and driving dangerously. Yet these are all forgotten when a chance to moan about cyclists appears.![]()
