I'll try to help.
1. Start trillian, you should be at the "preference page
2. Go to the section "idenities and connections
3. Click the button "add new connection"
4. In the first line of the box thingy that has 5 windows in it type aulro.
5. Second, click on the little button with the .... on it. Open that up and it may ask you to refresh the list. click on that.
6. Select by double clicking the "Ausnet" folder and slect Ausnet: Random AU server
7. click OK. you should have a line of text something like this "au.austnet.org::6667"
8. In the next box type your user name mine is "Grunfuttock" for example
9.Type your first name in the next box.
10. and in the last box put in /join #aulro
11. click the connect button.
12. Double click the two little yellow balls on the icon tray
13. move your mouse over the round buttons till you see one that says IRC. When you do RIGHT click that and selct from the drop down menu "Show status window"
14. By now you should be connected. If you are you will see a lot of writing. It can take a few tries.
15. In the little widow at the bottom type in the command /join #aulro OR you can just select the text from the last box (N° 10) and click Ctrl + C then put you cursor in the status window and press Ctrl + V.
Now you should be in the chat room.
Good luck.
Maybe some else might know of a quicker way but this is how I do it and it works for me.
ok, when I try and connect, I get this

your isp or your server is a known spammer or has been listed in dnsbl for having incorrect dns records or has an incorrectly setup proxy server that allows spammers to bounce spam.
get your self a decent isp or get the server fixed
LOL, now that is funny, because who is my ISP here, Bigpond broadband 1500 connection
as for the server, that could be it, I'll have to have a look at it's setting as i'm the admin here.

I would, but it's not my choice, the boss decides. If I had one at home i'd go with somebody different!
