What has happened to Google maps?

Over the last couple of months Google has been reducing the friendliness of Google Maps, today it is this:

Is it more of the spying activities of Google or some malfunction? Or just another paywall?

It annoys me no end that what I browse at home seems to be known to sites I use at work, so I get ads related to things I checked out at home but not at work.

Seems to much Big brother (George Orwell's 1984, not the unreality TV) to me.

How can we get away from all this?????

Yes but that doesn't explain the crappy almost DOS like Google Maps home page today.

I used to be able to get directions on Google Maps on my iPad but I can't find that option any more.

    EDIT: Just found it.

I only found that on my smart phone a week ago when I Googled a company where NavWoman couldn't find the street address. One of the problems was that the magnetic antenna interface previously obliterated the GPS reception signal.

Now I can't seem to turn off the Gmaps interface without turning off the GPS. (When I turn it back on the Yank in the box wants to take me back to Villawood. )

Is this part of the subtle migration to My Maps

Personally I would prefer to pay a fee and not be snooped on, eg gmail adverts
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

I just opened Google Maps on my laptop and no issues at all - same as always. Maybe it depends on the platform being used and settings.

What you have the noble thought that by your paying a fee Google won't treat you like a consumer ripe for an advertising thrust or as a data source?

I pay for optusnet cable and they now push ads at me when I use the webmail interface. Not happy Jan!

I was on today and no issues as such. Though for the life of me couldn't find the option to make a pin to share a location. Gave up after 20 mins trying.

Google has changed over the last few months to the point where I have canned it as much as possible. Forcing application updates and ads on you to the point of annoyance and yes, certain incarnations of Google maps have changed so you have trouble using them. My wife couldn't figure how to use it anymore on her tablet in Melbourne on the weekend. All the menu options and functions were shuffled around to suit the mentally retarded she reckons.
