Brisbane tannery supplies leather to the World

When I get motivated to make stuff, this is where I buy my leather, they are a pleasure to deal with. Bob

Just around the corner from me - I've picked up a couple of bits of tanned leather from them before.

It's been a while since I've detected their distinctive odour, even though I drive past on Boundary Rd regularly... I was scared they had gone out of business.

You must have a cast iron gut Dave, the old joint at Stafford used to positively stink! I went there as an apprentice to help the tradie with an over-heating three phase motor. When we got there they had a fellow hosing it with water to keep it running!
I also remember my father being offered a job as a fitter there, it was the only time in his life he refused a job even though he had no other prospects.
When they moved to Nerangba they were one of the first in the new industrial area.

Bit like the tannery in Stafford road, back in 60's , we used to play our school rugby league behind there , from memory. Distinctive aroma. The creek had nothing living in it. Bob

A high school classmate was from one of the Brisbane tannery families. His great grandfather started the business when its location was way out in the sticks. By the time he finished school development was creeping up on them. Within a few years there were residential sub-divisions right up to their fences. Inevitably, the new residents started complaining about the smell and started harassing politicians and bureaucrats to shut them down. His father looked at relocating and found outer councils didn't want them or there was insufficient water available or power was going to be expensive to get put on. Father decided it was all too hard and the land was valuable now being in the middle of new residential suburbs, so another local employer shut the shop.

It amazes me that people can sub-divide and sell land for residential purposes close to noisy factories, airports, steel works, tanneries, motor racing circuits etc. and then agitate to close these pre-existing industries down.

Funny you should mention that, Brian.
The same thing is no more than 18mnths away here.
The sprawl that is Northlakes will be just across the road from Packers (and all the other 'Noxious industrial' of the Narangba estate by then, already within 500m. I am stunned that approval was given to encroach on the estate with only a wide 2 lane road as buffer!?
    Cheers, BDave.

My Father worked for Hunter Brothers, after the War, in the era of outside toilets. Valleys RLFC got him the job, it was before big payments. In those days they got you a job, and Valleys reckoned working for Hunter Brothers was a great way to get the players fit. Running with an outside toilet tin on your shoulder, jumping fences, and running, to keep up with the truck. Dad went bush after that, ended up managing properties, helped by playing rugby league. Men were men, back then. Bob
