    Landroverin' Stuff Best Forgotten

HiJacked JOATT's thread in ForSale, so thought I better make amends and start a fresh thread here. I posted how I sympathised with Joatt as I have also done a few crazy or better off forgotton things whilst Landroverin'.
    Here's what happened:

I once dragged an Army 1/2 trailer behind an Army 6X6 all the way through Tenant Creek from our over night stop at the showgrounds. Locals were cheering and running beside me, waving like frenzied Mother Teresa supporters. I loved the adulation, after all, there I was, one of the countries finest (younger and fitter) being applauded. It felt good.

Wonder if they still would have cheered if I hadn't forgotton to raise the jockey wheel which had torn off, wrapped around the wiring cable, torn that out, bounced up and punctured one of my diesel jerrycans and was bouncing merrily to and fro from one side of the trailer to the other scraping and sparking along the way whilst leaving a nice fountain trail of dieso.....

Always thought they were a weird mob .... easy to amuse:

Anyway, anyone else got a sad tale like that to share, or rather would not prefer to share, but would do so, so we can all learn from your mistakes, and take the P*ss outa ya!

    Regards
    Ralph

I'll add another (although not landrover based)

During my days with the fire service at Sydney(KS)Airport we hitched a mobile welder to the back of the firetruck and took off to do some work at the "drill ground"

The radio then reported an obstruction on the taxiway (a mobile lighting set) when we had a quick look there was nothing on the tow hitch.

We made a couple of sheepish guys re hooking to the truck in front of a queue of light aircraft and the airport safety officers.

Would probably be a sacking offence in todays climate.

Woops, who left that there :?:

You're right, today that would have resulted in the airport being shut down, baggage handlers going on strike, security breach investigation and a new hitch for the truck :!:

    Anyone top this?

When out with the 4wd club ( i am the only land rover owner) we were trying to climb a really steep hill covered in loose shale. I had tow attempts and failed, then one of the other guys asked what the tyre pressure was at. I dont know i exclaimed. After checking, they were at 45psi and one was at 50. We aired down and up i went. ops: ops:

Then when we got to the top the line into the lift pump had stuffed the fitting and diesel was ****ing everywhere. Not good when they are all toyo fans. ops:

it got up there with a fuel leak.

what you should have done was get everyone else to pump their tyres and see how far they would have got.

Yeah, got up there with a fuel leak, quite a sizeable fuel leak to.

I didnt think of getting them all to do it with 45psi in their tyres. I also had the thinnest tyres of them all. They had these big fat tyres, the 5 or so vehicles created two tyre tracks full of bull dust running up the hill and i couldnt find new ground for traction, just ran up the middle of their tracks. The last time I went to the drill ground at KSA was when there was a Lincoln bomber there. We had to do some fire training using that. That was back in 1965 when I was at DCA Training School, Carrington Rd, marrickville.

Mine would have to be the time I was attending a car fire on top of ourimbah hill on the f3, on arriving we found a xf panelvan well alight with a lpg tank venting a huge flame (this was my first lpg fire) Being at the end of our first line out I proceeded to attack the source of the fire.
By which time another unit arrived. We had 3 lines on this fire already before it was almost out, the flame was still venting from the lpg tank as I hit the flame for the last time extinguishing the flame. Seconds later I felt a huge thump on the helmet as the captain told me I had to relight the flame (ok not in so many words 8O ) Apprently the day I had missed training was the day on lpg fires and according to proceedures I had to leave the flame alight to avoid the venting lpg pooling and igniting. I was only meant to cool the tank to avoid an explosion. oooops ops: Luckily the fire started again and I didn't have to light it

i was just out my apprenticeship and we were working on the beaurepaires at mascot, turning it in to a whole lot of factort units. after working in the front factory, we had some work to do in the rear one and had to move our primitive cherry picker down there.
it was a a hand operated and moved saw-tooth style that must've weighed the best part of a tonne and dragging it with 2 semi flat tyres and no way to inflate them was near impossible.
i had an idea to hook it up to the back of my hi-lux with some rope i had on baord and use the ute to drag it down there.
as an added safety, i got the two apprentices to sit on my tail gate to observe it in case anything went pear-shaped.
as i slowly moved out of the factory unit there was an enormous crashing noise and a bit of resistance on the hi-lux followed by the words 'stop stop stop"
since my two lookouts were too busy talking to notice anything awry, i tore the bottom 4 panels out of the roller door with the gantry of the cherry picker. i didn't get in too much trouble but i was stressing for a while.
